Question about Dyson DC14 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

2 Answers

My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible "ratcheting"sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and properly on the unit. I checked to make sure all of the "traps" and hoses are clear of obstructions, the belt is on the brush securely and moves freely, the brush itself spins freely, but there is still the "ratcheting" noise. Any other suggestions?

Our DC33 was making the same ratcheting sound immediately upon placing the cleaner/brush head on the carpet. We carefully pulled the beater/brush bar out of the vacuum. Once removed, we pulled the black plastic end off of the center rod. We discovered hair wrapped around each end of the center rod. After the hair was removed and the clean/brush bar was re-installed, the vacuum ran flawlessly. Hope it works as well for you as it did for us.

Something is causing the brush to slow down, either it is full of hair or debris or the brush itself is wearing out and may need changed. The noise you are hearing is the motor protector keeping it from burning up becuse there is some type of drag on the brush. If there is no issues with the brush then I would suspect the clutch assembly is worn and needs replaced. Here is a diagram for you to look at and go from there.

It is probably the brush roll motor making the noise. Remove the brush roll & belt and turn both motors on. If you do not hear the noise when both motors are running the noise is likely coming from the brush roll

Makes a ratchetting noise due to hair caught in brush; cleaned the brush and replaced the brush cover but still makes noise. what is the problem?

You have to take it to a vacuum shop and have a new clutch put in. The DC-7 and DC-14 have a clutch that needs replacing usually every year to year and a half.

Older Dyson 07 Animal, loud ratcheting noise on carpet setting

That is an indication that the belts are worn, stretched or broken. You simply need to replace the belt. Here is a link to the belt(s) you need and a manual you can view:

Dyson making loud noise

If your brushroller isn't spinning it will make the loud sound. Try removing the brushroll and reinstalling it. If this doesn't work, you may need a new brushroller. You can find one here...

The rattly sound means the drive belt has snapped or the protective clutch has slipped. This needs repair by someone who knows how to repair Dysons officially. Sadly its the kind of model that can't be done by the owner.

Loud noise when I start the vacuum in carpet position

It's most likely the Belt Slip Protection Dyson uses to prevent the user from having to replace belts. I recently bought a Dyson and love it other than it literally sits there and makes horrible noises 80% of the time. I completely disassembled the vacuum and found that the spring they used for this belt slip protection is WAY too weak. The weak spring seems to let the belt slip protection pop off way too frequently and unnecessarily. I stretched the spring back out and whammy no more horrible clanking. Of course it'll take you a couple of hours, some good tools and some serious ingenuity to get to where the parts are but problem solved. It'll still ratchet when picking up a sock or dog toy or something, but sitting there ratcheting on short dense carpet is unacceptable. Hope this helps!!!

Loud noise when I start the vacuum in carpet position

Not exactly a solution, but more of an explanation. The noise is caused by a ratchet device that's designed to protect the belt if the brush roller becomes blocked. It's a bit like a clutch that slips when resistance on the brush gets too great. The noise will occur if there's a solid blockage, of course, but it will also occur whenever the machine senses excessive resistance. This may happen on carpets with really thick pile, but can also happen if the carpet is loosely fitted and can be sucked up tight to the roller by the force of the vacuum.
Small consolation, but the problem should lessen as the brush wears. Meanwhile, if all else fails, switch the brush off (hard floors mode) while vacuuming the problem carpet(s).

Hi.

Check that brush roller (beater bar) is free to turn with no obstruction.
If it is still noisey after doing this try this site for Dyson repair manuals.

Stand vacuum up and with it plugged in. Rotate knob between carpet and bare floor and back 5 times leaving it on carpet when finished. Rotate vacuum back from upright position and lay vacuum on the floor, rotating it onto its side. Turn vacuum on.
