Leanne Hi. When I replaced the black ink cartrige in my x83 printer the carrier slams all the way to the left with a lot of force. The printer worked fine all I did was replace the cartrige. The power button from that point on did not even work I have to pull the plug to turn the machine off. I have done this many times without any problem. What is the reason for this and what can be done to fix it? Please help. Thanking you in advance for your concern.

I never really saw what was broken. But because of the age of the printer it was best to purchase a new one. Thanks for your help.

Hello there.

I have checked lexmark's website on troubleshooting this problem for you.

As per the link here we need to try the following steps to resolve the problem.

Carrier stall" Error and the Carrier Slams in the Printer ID:ENUS12078 lexmark x83 carrier stall - null.gif null.gif
If the printer carrier is slamming into the side of the printer, please try the following:

  1. Disconnect the power supply from the back of the printer.
  2. Open the front cover of the printer where the cartridges are located.
  3. Look for two black bands that span from left to right (they should have one serrated side and one smooth side). Just above the black bands there is a transparent strip; this strip is called the Encoder strip.
  4. Flick this strip lightly with your finger to make sure that it is running smoothly from left to right. You may need to do this two or three times. CAUTION: Do not pull the strip!
  5. Close the front cover of the printer and reconnect the power supply.
  6. If the problem persists, you may need to contact Lexmark Technical Support.
Let us know how this goes and we can assist you futher, if the printer is damaged and is under a year old, lexmark may be able to repair or replace it for you.

Hope this helps.

Error: "Carrier Stall" ID:470

To check the cartridge carrier:

1. Unplug the printer.
2. Move the cartridges to the left by hand and then take them out.
3. Try to print without the cartridges in the carrier. Do you still receive a Carrier Stall error message?
4. If not, put the cartridges back into the carrier and snap them in at the back. The message should no longer appear.

If the power light on the printer is not blinking, the error message may be caused by a communication error. Do the following:

1. Remove any other devices attached to the USB/LPT port.
2. Uninstall the Lexmark printer.
3. Connect the printer directly to the PC and ensure that power is being supplied to the printer.
4. Reinstall the printer.

Message reads "cartridge short press power key"

The error indicates that one or both of the cartridges has a short circuit. Please follow the steps below to identify and fix the problem:

1. Make sure the printer is on.

2. Open the printer cover. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.

Note: If the carrier does not automatically move to the center, turn off the printer/unplug the printer from the power source and then slide the carrier to the center.

3. Remove both cartridges from the carrier.

4. Close the printer cover.

5. Rebrick (pull out power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds).

6. When the printer turns on, reinsert one cartridge first.

7. Close the printer cover and check for any errors.

8. If no error appears, reinsert the other cartridge. Close the printer cover.

9. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the error to appear with a new cartridge.
If problem continues, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.

The EJ error on your printer indicates that your ink cartridge carrier has stalled. Open the printer cover and clear the mechanical jam, then press the power button. Try to reseat your cartridges and make sure it's properly inserted in the carrier.

After replaceing an ink cartriage every time I turn the printer the ink tray slams to one side then all the way back I gert an error message to start it again and slam bam. I hope you can help.

The encoder strip may have come out of the sensor slot. Turn off power, slide cartridge carrier to center, place finger on each side of encoder strip which runs behind the carriage and push the encoder strip down and back up, slightly back and forward if necessary to get it into the sensor slot which is located behind carrier. If it is in slot, sliding the cartridge carrier back and forth to see if therre is movement. If so repeat.
