Question about Sharp AL 1631 Copier

Woodpecker noise II

I have a similar problem as "LOUD woodpecker noise" with a Sharp AL-1631 but with some variations that I think are important to list it separately.

I opened up the drawer to place more paper when still making a copy. After this, I got the LOUD Woodpecker noise and cant use the multi-bypass tray. I still get copies using paper from the drawer, but the noise is still there. I looks like a gear is rotating and hitting a plastic part. The noise comes from the multi-bypass tray and side cover.

I tried the following but the noise is still there and cant get copies from paper loaded in the multi-bypass tray:
1. Turn off/on.
2. Copy without the paper tray.
3. Copy without the TD cartridge.

Is there any solution for this?

Hi and thank you very much for your response. I would like to answer your questions about possible codes or the status of side door as follows.

Side cover. The side cover closes without any indication of misadjustment. We tested again applying pressure to the closed cover but the sound continues.

Codes. There are no codes shown on the screen. This machine is working great as always except for two things:
    1. Multi-bypass tray. The feeding mechanism of the multi-bypass tray is not working when requested using the operation panel. This is the only section of the machine that is not working.
    2. Woodpecker noise. This noise has a frequency that is similar to the pass/gap between gear teeth. It comes from an area that includes the side cover and the rear part of the machine close to the side cover. This frequency makes me think that probably a gear might be hitting a mispositioned plastic part of the feeding mechanism in the multi-bypass tray.

Depending on your recommendations, I am planning to open up the section located between the paper tray and the multi-bypass tray beneath the copier.

Please let me know your comments about this.

    Regards,

    Charliegreen

Theoldtech, thanks for trying. The copier is working fine, so far, after my secretary gave it a girly hit! I will have into account you recommendation if this happens again.

    Thanks.

Open the rear door above the bypass feed area. Find a small phillips screw on the bottom near the left side. It is located near the door interlock switch. Remove the screw and gently lift the cover starting on the left side. This will allow view of the paper pickup roller. There is a plastic piece over the pickup roller that was jammed in the down position. When it was allowed to move freely it returned to the up postion. Replace the cover and the small phillips screw. Close the door. Try the printer again. When I did this, the woodpecker noise disappeared and the copier returned to normal operation.

A technician should look at this. There could be a gear going bad on it. Ive see a fee cases where the drum gets bad and cant turn any more.

Are there error codes on the screen?

Make sure the right door where the bypass tray is closed all the way.

Where is the computer connection to this printer/copier? Sharp AL-1631

If your model number is 1631, there are no provisions for operation as a scanner or printer, it is a copier only.
The very similar 1641CS does have these features.

Noises when printing copies

Take the new cart. out and reinstall the old cart. Does the noise disappear? I would tap and shake the toner cart. BUT BE CAREFULL, the cart is ready to spill toner. On the box and in the instructions it tells you, or should, that you must shake and tap the outside of the cart. This is due to settling and the toner maybe packed. By tapping and shaking it will feel the toner. If the toner is packed it will put undue pressure on the augers inside the toner cart. and cause a grinding noise. If after tapping and shaking, reinstall the new cart. and check. If everything is ok -- great. If the noise remains contact the company your purchased the cart. from and ask for a replacement. These cart. are mass produced and mostly reused ( refurbed). Parts wear now and they do not replace the inside parts, they just repack with toner and seal.
