You need to configure your video card.
I'm assuming this is a laptop you are working with. Go into the video card properties, and make sure the VGA port that drives the projector is not set to extend your Windows desktop.
From your desktop, right-click and choose the "properties" option.
In the Display Properties window that comes up, select the far-right tab "Settings".
See the rectangles labelled 1 & 2? Click on the rectangle with the 2, and then look down near the bottom where you'll see a checkbox with "Extend my Windows desktop to this monitor."
Make sure this box is not checked (it most likely is right now, and that's the source of your problem).

We found that the bulb was dim because it was about to burn out. The projector's filter han't been kept clean, causing it to run hot, which in turn shortened the bulb's life.
