You can charge it either way, but from my experience you get a better charge when the power is off.

Player will not turn on doesn't look like it is charging. Could the power cord be defective?

Hello,

I wound first suggest you get a similar power cord to charge your mp3 player before concluding that the power cord is bad, if the similar power cord did not charge your mp3 as well, then, it means the power cord is defective. you can now go ahead to get a replacement for the power cord.

Take care.

How do i charge my mp3 player/sandisk sansa m240

Connect the USB cable to the MP3 player then power up a computer and plug this MP3 and cable into the computer's USB port.
You can also charge it by purchasing a 5V USB power adapter and plugging the MP3 player and cable into this adapter.

Charging mp3 player

If your MP3 has an inbuilt Li-Ion battery (e.g. no compartment for a standard/Ni-MH AAA battery), then connecting the player to your computer will normally charge it - this is the case for the PD-6070 'stick' player. Your player will also indicate that it is being charged (or not charged!) via the battery level/power indicator which is located on the top RHS.
Hope it helps!

My sansa express is not recognizing the computer device

It sounds like your mp3 has a low battery and needs to be charged most models require you to turn the power on the mp3 on before you plug it in to be charged and then you leave the power on while it charges.

Won't Charge

On some systems, the usb does not supply enough power for battery charging, so it briefly comes on, then goes off. Also there are power adapters with a USB plug on them for charging things that use the USB for power. You may have to end up buying one. Though they are very usefull now that more and more devices use the USB for battery charging power.

CHARGING THE MP3 PLAYER

Try hooking it up to different computers. My daughter couldn't charge on her home computer - but it worked on her laptop - silly, huh?
