Question about Magellan MAESTRO 3100 98083401 GPS Device

1 Answer

Like a lot of people, I tried to update my Magellan Maestro 3100 on Windows Vista. It didn't work and my GPS is now unusable... all of the files were deleted. Anyone have the files backed up?

It does not recognize the GPS, so therefore the update does not just simply run. It's a shame you cannot E-mail me at superbman@hotmail.com. I guess I will need to find some other solution...

Hi superbman

i have the files, but fixya wont let me give them to you (we are not allowed to contact the customers)....but if your computer see your 3100, you wont need them..just run the update again and wait till its done (it takes a while, the update is huge and takes about 30 minutes)...

if it doesnt work, Magellan will repair or replace any of their gps that were render inoperable due to one of their updates..

For US and Canada - by phone

You may ask a technical support question or request a repair and get a Return Authorization (RA) number by phone. An RA number is required prior to shipping your product to Magellan for repair.
Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST/PDT Telephone: 800 707 9971

i got ya superbman, i would suggest that before you do anything else, consider this.

Magellan will repair or replace any of their gps that were rendered inoperable due to one of their
updates..i have done this atleast 6 times and so have countless other people i have given this advice to.....as long as the update (2.18 i think) caused the problem and the instructions were followed, ie. fully charged or plugged in, left the update complete and didnt unplug it before it was done ect ect ect....i suggest you try that before doing anything else...these are a real pain to get running again once the computer wont even see it...if your computer wont see it, you need way more then just the files to load back in to it, you need to know how to do it.....let me know if you still want them...................bill

    Bill,

Do you happen to know if there is a cost from Magellan and what that might be? Also, do you know how long it normally takes for them to replace or repair?

    Thanks.

  • Ben Dover Nov 18, 2010

the only cost i ever had to pay, was the cost to ship it to texas (about 3.00) then they payed shipping back...ever one i ever sent, took less then 2 weeks to get back after i shipped it. 2 of the ones i sent back, were replaced with new units, they even offer to upgrade them to another unit at a greatly reduced rate.

the only other thing they ask, is that you send it by UPS for tracking reasons, because if its sent usps, they wont guarantee it for some reason. once you call them and explain that the 2.18 update (i think thats what it is) destroyed your gps, they'll issue an RMA and directions to send it back.

like i said, its not impossible to fix your gps, but its way easier to just send it back to them...otherwise, theres a thousand step(thats an exaggeration) to get it running again, including building your own files to put on an sd card then to the gps, just to get the computer to see your unit.....

good luck, and please forgive the format of these comments, i know it looks like a 1st grader is writing, but its a glitch with FIXYA...................bill

hi semorrison1

if you where trying to install the 2.18 update for the 3100, try running the update again if your
pc still sees your 3100. if it doesnt see it, it becomes alot more difficult to restore.

Hi My Magellan Maestro powers up with the Magellan screen and the bar scrolls but thats all it does? Carl Lucas Aberdeen MD

i just replied to a fellow with the same problem and since your problem is same, ill post what i wrote him/her but try a hard reset 1st..turn the gps on then locate the little pin hole on the side, using a paper clip, push reset....if that fails, try the 2.18 update if you havent already.

updates for any magellan can be found HERE
but read below first before getting the update

i cant stress enough that patients is a must here. this update is huge 1.75GB

follow the instructions below whether you have updated your gps already or not!

There are few ways to solve this problem. i assume you installed the 2.18 update for the 3100 and assuming you tried the reset already, try and run the update again and follow the directions to the letter..make sure the battery is fully charged (i also keep mine plugged in if the update doesnt say not to) and do not try and run the update across a network. this update is huge 1.75GB and can take an hour or so depending on the computer..do not interrupt the update process. if you do not have the 2.18 update read me file, i can try and post it here, but its in PDF and dont think i can post that

if all else fails, magellan will fix or replace for free any of there gps that were rendered inoperable due to one of there updates.

either solution will work but magellans going to tell you to run the update again anyway before sending it back.

i gave you the 2 easyest ways to fix it,but
there are other ways to get it running again, but if your not comfortable copying and moving files...youll make it even worst then it is.

hope this helps.

Magellan Maestro 3100 stuck on

If you followed the procedure closely, you now have an SD card with your backup on it. The backup consists of two folders: BACKUP, and USBTRANS. Insert the backup SD card in your PC's reader slot and open a "file explorer" aka "Windows Explorer", not to be confused with "Internet Explorer". You will use Windows Explorer to click and drag the USBRANS folder to the Maestro.

With the Maestro 3100 connected to the PC, a couple of Explorer folders will open and you can see the file structure for the GPS in 1, and in the other one a separate file structure for the blank SD card needed for the update. Look at the file structure for the GPS and you should see a handful of folders including "SYS".

  • Start the upgrade program, following the procedures.
  • Click the NEXT button at the bottom of the procedures screen.
  • Immediately copy the backed up USBTRANS folder (and all contents) to the SYS folder on the GPS.
  • The update should now find the Maestro 3100 and proceed with the update.

SUMMARY: copy USBTRANS (it should contain 1 file: UNIT.DAT)
  • from your BACKUP SD card (not the one in the Maestro)
  • to your Maestro 3100's SYS folder.
