You want to choose the channel down button to set the HDTV backlight to an energy star qualified level because when setting it to a retail display level you will be locked out of adjusting the television's picture menu however you like. It will automatically revert back to the automatic retail display level or not allow you to make adjustments at all. However some people (usually seniors) prefer the retail display level, which is extremely bright. It uses a lot of energy and the television will not last as long on that setting either.
