Question about Acer Aspire 7520-5185 Laptop

2 Answers

The laptop is dead. No lights no nothing. The ac adapter is good. Another one was tried to eliminate the possiblity of a bad ac source. We just laid it aside one day while it was turned on and when we went back to it there was nothing. It was plugged in to ac at the time. It does not work on the battery either. DEAD. Its only a little over 2 years old and not much use, mostly only when we are on the road.

This model of Acer Aspire laptop has had many similar problems reported. After looking around(see link below) it seems as though the root of all the problems is that one of the chips on the motherboard has a bad solder connection that shows up as a problem after so many hours of use. There are only two real ways the fix this problem.

  1. Replace the motherboard with a new one. This is the easiest way but has the problem of being expensive. The new motherboard may also have the same problem as the original.
  2. Reflow the chip that is the source of the problem. This is the more difficult way as it involves taking the computer apart, identifying the correct chip, and then using just enough heat for just the right amount of time to allow the solder to reconnect properly. It requires a heat-gun which can be seen as a steep investment for only one use. If you know what you are doing, and have the right equipment, than this is an easy(relative) fix.
If you don't know how to reflow a board or don't have a friend that's into the custom electronics field than you will have to find then buy a new motherboard.

its unfortunate, - i left my Dell plugged into AC outlet (without UPS protection) -- unclean power trckling in (120VAC varies within -10 to +10 volts at 2-6 Amp increase : not good for computer .. especially when you are dealing with 5-7 volt supply on the mainboard --- i had to replace my mainboard , cost me over three hundred fifty dollars, that's 5 years ago

now, i dont turn my computers on without Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)

i think you may have to replace the mainboard if there is no life in it

Asus wont turn on

For this kind of issue, please follow up the following steps to check:

1.confirm the battery and ac adapter connect the laptop normally.Maybe the bad connect lead to this problem. If there are no lights when you turn on laptop, one of possible reason is that your adapter is malfunction.

2.the second possible cause is laptop dc jack failure. If the dc jack is broken or loose, you are required to replace it or repair it.

3.Another possible reason is that there is something wrong with laptop motherboard. For this situation, it includs two kinds of possibility,a failure in an electronic circuit and BGA malfunction.

For more detailed reasons and solutions, please have a look at the following article:

If you verify your laptop adapter is dead and you plan to order a new one, I recommend one for you on the basis of your laptop model:

My acer aspire 4740g does not power on. i have removed the battery and directly connected to the power supply but still does not turn on.

Problem description:
The laptop is completely dead. When you plug the AC adapter and press on the power button, nothing happens. The laptop has no signs of life at all. None of the LED lights is working.
Possible cause:
1. AC adapter failure.
2. Power jack failure.
3. Motherboard failure.
Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:
1. Test the AC adapter with a multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.
Acer Aspire 4740 AC Adapter
2. It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one.
Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.
3. If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

I got a compaq c36 it was working fine but now it wont switch on or anything do you now what it could be

1. Plug the laptop into AC power.

2. Take out the battery.

3. Try a different outlet.

4. Look for the light that indicates that the AC adapter is plugged in. If that light isn't on, try plugging and unplugging the AC power jack and moving it around until the light shows its connected. If no light comes on, its possible you have a bad DC jack or the AC adapter needs to be replaced.

5. If the indicator light is on and the laptop won't power on, then it's possible you have a bad switch board or stuck button. Make sure no buttons are stuck. Conversely, push hard on the power button and move it around in order to make sure you're making good contact.

6. If you know the battery has a charge, unplug the AC adapter and connect the battery. If it turns on, then you can be sure you have a bad DC jack or a bad AC adapter.

Yellow light flickers 4 times when trying to turn

If you don't get the flickering lights when you try to boot up with the AC adapter hooked up but no battery, it sounds like the problem is most likely a bad power adapter. Your battery is dead, and that's why you get the flickering lights, but the AC adapter is bad so you can't use it to power the laptop or charge the battery.

You can typically get a new adapter for $20 or so, or maybe even cheaper on eBay.

Can't determine if battery is dead or charger.....

Take the battery out and just hook up the charger to the laptop and see if it turns on. If it does then your charger is good and the battery is bad.

If you hook up the ac adaptor only and it doesn't turn on the laptop then that means either the motherboard or the ac adapter is bad.

See if the AC Adapter has a green light on it, if it does see if it comes on when you plug it into the outlet, if it turns on then the ac adapter is good and the motherboard is bad.

Laptop not working on battery, i have changed the battery

There are several simple indicator to determine the source of the problem. There are 4 major components involved, the laptop circuitry, contact terminal, AC adapter and battery. Every laptop has a LED light indicating if it is in the charging mode (without powering up the laptop). Start out with your laptop shutdown. Pull out the battery, then plug in the AC Adapter. See any LED light go on? Try again, the same procedure now with the battery plug in first, then plug in the AC adapter. See any additional LED lights go on? If there is no different, than the laptop can not detect your battery. If the AC adapter can power up your laptop, you can eliminate the battery (assumed brand new battery) & AC adapter. This only leaves you with the laptop circuitry & contact terminal. If your laptop can charge up your old battery or any battery, then it might be still the battery & contact. So, you try these procedure to reduce down to the "problem" component.

Black Screen

try hooking up an external video source. Check to see if the computer is actually booting up. if the computer boots up, then the LCD invertor or Backlight of the screen is bad, need to be replaced.

If the computer does not boot up after hooking up an external video source, then most likely your motherboard is bad!

need to be replaced.
