2 options:
Change for a new chain - the chain is too stretching
Put a pressure ring on the adjusting screw - to help tighten the chain

The chain/bar won't stay tight. Becomes loose after several minutes of use.

If the nuts holding your guide bar are not worn, then you must replace the tensioner adjustment

You also need;

• Item 43; Bar Mounting Nut; $0.56 each (need 2) and

Yes i cracked the oil housing for my poulan pp4218avx 42cc chain saw and I was wondering if they sale a replacement housing to repair the saw.

A Poulan PP4218AVX Gas Saw link follows:
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP4218AVX-Gas-Saw/75.PP4218AVX-Gas-Saw.1.59.1.html
See the "Handle, Chassis and Bar Assembly" print, item 38. Is this what is broken? If yes it is possible to replace it, it is not terribly expensive, it is a great deal of precision work. I hope you already removed the clutch (left handed thread). I would probably keep this for parts and purchase a PP4218AVHD Gas Saw Type 2 as a replacement. HTH

I have an 18 inch bar and the chain has to be tightened every few minutes. I tighten the nuts against the bar as tight as I can but the bar must still be moving to loosing the chain. Do I need to add lock...

There is an adjusting pawl with a screw that does the tightening. The nuts only clamp the bar once the chain is tightened. The adjusting screw is in the plane of the bar. The pawl may have disengaged the bar or may have broken.

The chain is directional, only cuts one way. If a new chain won't cut, it must be on backwards.
