I replaced the fan about three months ago, completely cleaned everything inside at that time. I don't think it is a dust problem...

I tried everything that was suggested to me from the FixYa respondents. The laptop is dead...took it to the Geek squad and they told me the mother board was shot. So...I removed the hard drive and bought an adapter so I could use it as a USB drive and recover my data. Now I'm shopping for a new laptop. Thanks to all for your help!

Do you see any lights flickering around the pad?

Connect an external monitor to the VGA port and check if you can see anything when you power up.

U got an OVERHEATiNG processor! U need to open ur notebook and clean the HEAT SiNK and fan, air passages might already been blocked by dust and dirt! U could upgrade the fan motor for higher speed or add some cooling fan that u could buy in any computer accessory shop! Taaah!

I suggest if u don't know how to open ur NOTEBOOK, bring it to ur nearest dealer or computer tech!
If ur notebook doesn't open anymore just to check BiOS, somethings wrong w/ ur PROCESSOR!

On start up fan runs, no beeps, black screen, no response from keyboard & mouse. Unplugged everything for 30 minutes, then tried again, start up began then went to black screen, no keyboard, no m

in your case, there might be some problem with the main board.
usually no beeps will related to the processor error / mainboard error / ram error / PSU error

to check the processor : try to exchange the processor with the same type.

to check the Memory: try use rubber eraser to clean the cooper plate of the memory. then plugged it again.

in case if there is a power supply error, then try to exchange the power supply using other PC PSU.

if all steps above are checked, the problem might be at the mainboard. in that case, replacement will be the best option.

This morning there seems to be no power to the refrigerator at all.

Have you reset the house circuit breaker or checked the outlet to make sure you have power? If you have a volt meter you can track the power from the outlet to what is defective - possibly the power control board if everything is dead.

Wifes Acer laptop screen went black, power light is on, fan is running, but nothing comes up on the screen.... We're stumped...

If you reboot it and everything seems normal except there is no display, get a flashlight and examine the screen for a display with no backlight. Maybe it is just the back light power supply that has failed?
Hope that helps.

You have PC problem nto monitor problem since you can see the mouse.
Try booting in safe mode (hit F8) while booting up then go to system restore and set it back to the date you remember before the problem started.
Did you installed any new software or updates before this problem started?

Connect it to another PC, if you get the same result, the problem is the backlight, they go all of the time. I am constantly repairing these things in stores.
