I'm not sure if this is what is wrong with it but you could try going to the control menu and clicking on mouse options. under these setting try lowering the sensitivity level. doing this well make it so that it is not so jumpy when you touch the mouse pad

Hi

this link is a service manual -- if you wish to do it yourself repairs.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/xps140m/en/sm/index.htm

i would say take apart the palm rest section and keyboard, see if there is anything loose, or perhaps something inside (ie: dust or foreign object) hindering the palmrest section . The palmrest sectyion controls the mouse cursor of course and that may be a possiblity that the cable inside is loose ?

take a can of compressed air and blow the dust off the keyboard and palmrest after removed.

i hope this helps :)

SOURCE: cursor on my keypad jumps around

If your cursor moves erratically on the screen (for example, if it jumps around the screen, moves at varying speeds, or selects items on its own), perform the following steps:

1. Clean the surface of the touchpad with a dry, soft cloth to remove grease, sweat, moisture, or other liquids.

2. Adjust the sensitivity of the touch pad:.

a. Click the Start button and click Control Panel.

b. Click Printers and Other Hardware.

c. Click Mouse.

d. When the Mouse Properties window appears, click the Pointer Options tab.

e. Under Select a pointer speed:, click to move the slider bar closer to Slow.

f. Click OK.

g. Check to see if the touch pad still behaves erratically.

3. If the touchpad still caused the cursor to behave erratically, attach an external mouse to your computer and restart your computer. Use the external mouse to see if your cursor still moves erratically.

4. After connecting an external mouse, uninstall the touchpad driver from the Device manager listed under the "mice and other pointing devices" category and restart the Computer.

5. Download the Touchpad driver compatible to the Operating System installed on the Computer from the manufacturer's site and install it after restarting the Computer.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

How do i fix keystrokes that jump backward as I type?

Some Lenovo touchpads are over sensitive and they cause the cusor to slip or jump around. In Control Panel select Mouse or Touchpad. A box will open and you can locate touchpad Properties and adjust the sensitivity. Lenovo also has updated touchpad software/drivers for one or two of the most troublesome models. i was able to reduce the cursor jumping around quite a bit by adjusting the sensitivity, but i still don't think it's a good design.

Keep your hands away from the mouse pad when typing on the keyboard.

Jumping Cursor

Make sure your palm or more than one finger is not covering the touchpad. Laptops manufactured before 2013 did not understand "Multi-touch" on touchpads. Use only one finger on the touchpad and problem should be solved. If it doesnt, the touchpad is damaged. Buy a mouse.

Hello,

I suggest that you scan your computer with RadarSync so that you can find the latest touchpad driver update for your computer. It's a driver related issue.

Cursor jumping around when typing on a Dell 1530

It is most likely the touch pad...a way you can tell is if you have a USB mouse, turn off the touch pad and use the USB mouse...go to type and see if it still jumps around.
