Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
When the drive's dc adapter is plugged in, are you able to feed the hard drive start-up and begin to spin? Because if not, you either have a faulty dc adapter (unlikely,) or the power inverter board on the external hard drive case has failed. If there proves to be no power being delivered to the drive, even after trying a different adapter, then I would believe that the issue is in the case. Most likely, none of your information is lost, as inside the casing is a standard sata hard drive, that, with the proper tools can be removed and connected to a computer.
Let me know what you find and I'll be able to help you out better.

Most, if not all computers detect external hard drives before windows starts to load. If you see no evidence of drive data light activity i would go into the bios to check you have the right usb settings. You will also see all the hard drives that are connected to the computer. If yours is missing, and nothing you do to the usb settings will bring it into play, then your motherboard cannot take usb hard drives. Of the 23 computers i have built 4 had a bios that would not work with an external hard drive. Yours may be one of those that just don't work with them
