Question about Zenith C34W23 34" TV
I have a n older Zenith C34w23 HDTV which has given me exceptional service. I recently purchased an LG LHT734 home theater system. I am also connected to Dish Network's VIP222 HD receiver in which I receive HD service. I want to connect the system so that I can control the sound THROUGH THE C34W23 HDTV with the Dish Network Remote Control.
The C34W23 Users Manual says that I can connect the HDTV's Audio Optical Out jack to the Home Theater's Audio Optical IN jack; select the Optical IN input on the Home Theater system; leave the Home Theater system on; and control the sound with the "volume control" on the TV ... using only ONE remote control.
When I connect the system in this configuration, I get NO sound through my Home Theater system.
If I switch the Optical cable from the optical output of the HDTV to the optical output of the Dish Network Receiver, then I get true Dolby 5.1 sound, but I have to control it with the home theater's remote control. Also, I use a VCR connected to a standard A/V componet input on the C34W23 HDTV (I use the VCR almost every day). This is just too much juggling of remote controls ... and my technically spouse will never learn the system.
What am I doing wrong? Is the optical signal from the older C34W23 HDTV in a compatible format with the optical input of the new LHT734 home theater system? Am I doing something else wrong with the home theater system (I am selecting the "AUX OPT IN" input)?
Please help! I'm ready to return the home theater system and get my money back!
First and foremost when the chance comes along buy a Harmony remote. Your spouse will love the simplification. A couple of things, On the tv with the optical hose connected and the other end in your hand, do you see the light. Its not a laser and eye safe. Should be a red glow. If not, implies two things the tvs optical is bad or it needs to be enabled via tv menu audio settings. If you see the red glow, then its a protocol issue. Verify your tv is setup on the proper audio mode that your receiver is wanting to see. Probably PCM. I am not directly farmiliar with the tv, but using the dish receiver as a reference (you know its working) set the audio options on the tv similar to the dish receiver. IE pcm, dts, etc.. Let me know thanks
