Question about Dell 5100cn Laser Printer

Prints only blue and pink

I have a Dell 5100cn that will only print in blue and pink. I replaced the yellow toner as well as the imaging drum and the transfer roller but the problem still continued.

I had the same problem. I popped off the right side panel and wiggled all the wires and the yellow started working again. It seemed to be a connection problem.

There seems to be an electrical problem with the yellow toner. Check all the electrical contacts that make contact with the yellow toner. They may be just dirty or they may be bent. If they look good then the could be a problem with the power supply of the printer or the engine board.

Hi Everytning I print has a very narrow pink line straight down the centre of the page, also every so often the print has a black/yellow/blue/pink thick line running across the page. Thanks


The narrow pink line is coming from your magenta toner/drum cartridge. You may be able to open the from cover and look at the 4 toners. If you look at the magenta (like pink) cartridge, you might see the thin line on the drum surface.
The multicolored band that sometimes shows up on your prints is most likely the transfer belt unit. This is caused by an area of the belt that is not being cleaned very well. This probably tends to show up when you are running mutilple prints of a page.
So it looks like to may need to replace your magenta toner and look at getting a transfer belt unit.

Dell 3110cn Printer prints shades of pink


Have you pulled out the imaging drum and transfer roller to see if they are caked in Magenta toner? if so they will need to be cleaned off. Would also suggest blowing out the area around the drum to rid of loose toner in that area.

Dell 5100cn printer printing yellow lines across the page.


This can be any of rthe following depending on the position iof the lines on the page. You need to establishe the position of the lines relative to the top of each page and this determines which of the following component will cause the problem

Dirty or damaged developer roller.
Dirty or damaged charging roller.
Dirty or damaged cleaning roller.
Dirty or damaged developer DSD wheels. These wheels are located on the outer ends of the color toner cartridge and appear as a black bushing.
Dirty or damaged transfer roller.
Dirty or damaged transfer drum.

All of them need inspecting and cleaning

I had the same problem on an HP, and the only thing that solved it was replacing the drum. Not sure if that will help, not even sure if that printer has a drum, but maybe swap out the ink or toner or drum and see if that helps. If it doesn't, at least the money you spent on those options goes towards something you can use...

Dell 5100cn - Magenta color on all prints


Hi 56tbird.

The answer you got from Dell was partially correct.

It is the Magenta Developer that is causing your problem, however, you can replace this part for less then the printer if you do the work yourself.

I have successfully instructed other on replacing the developer units, although you will have to procure the part.

This is one of the 4 color assemblies you see when you remove the imaging drum.

The part number for the Magenta Developer is M6090

The first thing to do is price the part. I usually suggest doing a google search for the part number. you will find many resellers that way.

you might also try a search on Ebay for the part number as well.

If you decide to purchase the part, if you somewhat mechanically inclined, you should be able to replace the part without a problem.

I can give you detailed instructions on how to change the developer if you decide to go that route.

Deteriorating image quality


Good Evening Robert,

The setting for non dell toner only controls the fuser temperature, and will not cause you any print quality issues. Toner is actually made up of ink and plastic. The fuser melts the plastic to "fuse" the image to the paper. Dell toner is set to "fuse" at a specific temperature. when you use non Dell toners, the temperature required to fuse may be different, and when set to non dell toner setting, the fuser temperature is raised to the maximum to ensure the other toner fuses properly. The down side to this is that you will wear out the fuser sooner then it should.

As far as the print quality issue you are having, it is most likey caused by the imaging drum.

Regardless of the estimated life for the imaging drum as stated by the printer, this is just an estimate. Many things can and will cause the imaging drum need replacing. ( Just yesterday I replaced a black toner in a 3115 that was less then a month old... genuine Dell... with more then 75% expected usage left because it was defective).

On this printer, each of the 3 colors and the black are all independent of each other with the exception of the imaging drum. Even within the imaging drum, cyan and black are independent of magenta and yellow on the first stage of transfer. When you have deteriorated print quality that effects more then one color, the first step is to replace the imaging drum.

The Primary transfer, secondary transfer, and tertiary transfer of the image are ALL contained within the imaging drum.

The chances of having 3 or 4 bad Developers is very very slim. If your print quality issue was related to only ONE color, then I would say you had a bad developer unit ( the 4 items located behind the imaging drum when removed). These are far more difficult and expensive to change.

The BTR ( bios transfer roller ) is the only other item that "could" effect your print quality, however, based on the symptoms you discribed, I doubt it. Besides, if i am not mistaken, the imaging drum kit comes with a new btr anyway.

Although I am sure you may be disappointed with the fact the drum unit is failing while showing it still has life remaining, the solution to replace it should restore your unit to full operation. The unit is light sensative, and effected by physical age as well as the number of prints it has supplied.

Dell 5100CN Not printing magenta


Dell 5100cn won't print yellow. No error messages except "replace imaging drum soon". Replaced yellow cartridge, cleaned yellow, etc. Still not working

I am going to answer this even though there was no reply to my clarification report.

No, it is not a HVPS problem. This is a magenta developer problem. The magenta developer for some reason has the highest failure rate of all the developers, including black. Perhaps because there are more shades of magenta in color prints.

Since you changed the toner, we can assume you are not out of magenta, but it is possible that you did not run a developer cleaning in the maintenance mode on the magenta developer.

If the magenta toner had been allowed to run out all of the way, a developer cleaning would allow the toner auger to move fresh toner from the toner dispenser, through the feed tube, into the developer.

If you have run the developer cleaning, and you can see that there is magena toner on the magenta developer ( for clarification, the developers are located behind the imaging drum. remove the drum to expose the 4 developers ), then the developer itself is defective.

Horizontal Striping Problem on a Dell 5100cn


As you have just replaced the drum you may have a faulty drum unit put old one back in a test if lines go way then return drum to store and get a replacement. If they do not go the check the toners and the fuser unit.
