Delayed oven ignition

Fuel Type
If this is a new installation make sure the gas valve has been properly adjusted for the type of gas. Lp and natural gas use different orfices and pressures. A conversion kit is available.

Burner
The burners may need to be cleaned. There are small holes that allow gas through holes that are ignited by the igniter. These holes can become clogged up. You can usually clean these with a toothpick or small wire, watch the video. If it is the oven burner and you have a small flame or it does not stay lit check the video on troubleshooting a gas range.

Gas Valve
The gas valve rarely fails but this can. If the gas burners are clean and the gas valve is properly adjusted replace the gas valve. This should be done by a professional. Leaks can be very dangerous and also the gas pressure needs to be adjusted for the type of fuel you are using.

When I turn on the heater, sometimes it comes on and sometimes it doesn't. The pilot remains lit. The repair person ruled out gas problems. Then he said it was the Thermostat but ruled that out and...

It sounds like your problem is delayed ignition.

This can be caused by low pilot flame height (Clean the pilot orifice or increase the pilot gas flow if necessary, by adjusting at combination control valve). Or the burner ports near the pilot flame are clogged and need cleaning. But, don't enlarge the holes. Low gas pressure can also cause this, but your repair person already ruled this out. If you have a wall thermostat, the Thermopile or Pilot Generator (it's the same thing) may be weak and failing. It's not generating enough millivolts of electricity to open the gas valve, when the thermostat is turned up. Or the Pilot Flame is not always touching it. If it is the Pilot Generator, the Cozy Part # is 70098 and cost around $40.00. A talented service man can install it easily.

Generally, these are the first things that you troubleshoot for delayed ignition.
Hope this helped to get you started.

Adjust resonance screw makes loud noise on start up

I'm not sure what you mean "adjust resonance screw". I'm going to guess the adjustment screw your talking about is under at screw cover and is the appliance regulator screw. It adjust the gas input to your burners. Too low pressure is caused by backing the screw off and can result in delayed ignition or a "loud noise". It's really a small explosion caused by built up gas and damage your heater. Too high of pressure is caused by turning the screw in too far and can over-fire the heater which is also dangerous. I'm assuming you burn natural gas because with propane the appliance regulator is wide open. Your gas company may come and use a manometer to set the manifold pressure to factory settings (3.5 to 4.0 W.C.) for you. Otherwise, turn the screw back in until the ignition is not delayed and the loud noise is replaced by a nice quick ignition. Good luck.

Delay in oven burner to light after pilot is lit.

Usually delayed lighting on a standing pilot system is caused by a gas pathway that is dirty from spilled food or grease. If you can remove the burner assembly and clean it that will correct the problem. If there is a removable plate above it then you can remove that and get access instead of removing it. Pilot ignitions work by creating a column of gas between the pilot and the burner that is established when the burner is turned on kind of like a fuse. A small tube my be used to establish the column of gas between burner and pilot and it may get blocked with food that overflows. Sometimes the pilot is just located right next to the burner and may get partially blocked or the orifice in the burner next to the pilot may be blocked. Cleaning all this helps. Be very careful with gas. Work in a well ventilated area. Turn on gas very briefly to run an ignition test. Turn off the gas and vent it off if it fails to light in about 5 seconds. Unburned propane drops to the floor and collects. Natural gas rises. Be aware of this when you ventilate.

Ge spectra gas stove top not lighting

If your top burners are not lighting or will not work, it is possible that the burners have become dirty or wet. Please follow the troubleshooting directions below before calling service:
  1. Turn you burner to the Lite position:

If you hear clicking or sparking, go to Step 2.

If you do not, check your circuit breakers. If the circuit breaker is ok, we recommend that you schedule service by calling 1-800-432-2737 or schedule service online.

  2. Clean the burner and electrode:

First remove the burner grate, cap, and head. Use a needle or paper clip to poke through the holes on the burner head. Re-assemble and try the burner.

Remove the burner grate, cap, and head. Even if it looks clean, wipe the tip of the electrode with a clean, dry paper towel and PRESS IT DOWN. Re-assemble and try the burner, again.

Check to see if the burner works, If not, then go to Step 3.

  3. Re-assemble - Make sure that each burner top matches its burner bottom. The burner top will lay flat if put on correctly.

Check to see if the burner works, If not, then go to Step 4.

  4. The spark igniter is operating properly, but the burner is still not lighting. At this point, we would recommend that you schedule service by calling 1-800-432-2737 or schedule service online.

Sounds like that ignitor is weak.  When the ignitor glows it builds up resistance to the gas valve for gas to come in.  If it sometimes takes 10 min then the proper resistance isn't there and this will give you that gas smell.  Replace the ignitor and this should solve your problem.  Can expect to pay $80 - $100 for the part.
