Question about Computers & Internet

I am trying to install a WD 250GB Passort V2 External USB 2.0 - 2-50" Portable Hard Drive but unfortunately my Windows XP doesn't want to know it. I have had it just over a week now and when I first plugged it in the software downloaded straight away, so I put on a couple of files to try it as I want to transfer files to my Windows Vista lap top, and they loaded on to the external drive ok and then on to Vista. A couple of days later I thought I will now transfer all my files but when I came to plug the drive in there was just nothing, no software, no icons and nothing to say that the hard drive is there at all, can you please suggest anything ?

Hi
Have you tried to go into your cmos settings and enable the settings to detect your cd rom
You should be able to use a external cd rom connected through your USB port to load and re-install windows and your drivers if you have the motherboard cd.
The problem is your limited in your options to work from the hard drive but a disk also gives you the option to repair the filing system and replace missing files.

The problem with installing windows on one pc and it not working on another pc is the motherboards are not compatible, and the configuration has to be similar or the same so the hard drive can boot up and communicate between the hardware and software.

Your options are use a CD rom, change your MB or google your problem and hope someone else was able to resolve this issue.

Cheers

Can i use an external hard drive to run an operating system (XP)

Yes. You can run an OS from an external hard drive. You have to install the OS to the External hard drive and will have to boot from the USB. I have tried that for Fedora Linux OS but not for XP. Basically all Operating systems boots up in the same manner. So definitely, its possible with windows XP also.

Thanks

My guess is that the pc is trying to use a drive letter that is already taken. Make sure the drive is plugged in. Goto Start -> run -> type compmgmt.msc and hit enter. Click on disk management. You should see the drive in the list. Right-click the external drive and click change driver letter. choose a letter that is not already taken. that should do it..

Verbatim 250GB External Hard Disk not recognized by PC

Almost always, when a USB drive doesn't assign a drive letter in MY Computer the issue is a Mapped network drive using the drive letter the USB drive is attempting to use.

With the drive connected, open DISK MANAGEMENT find the USB Drive, right click it and assign it an available drive letter.

Unfortunately if there is no driver for Vista, then your out of luck. Since Vista is a widely used OS and getting bigger, then the MyBook manufactures must create a Vista driver soon or they will be in danger of going out of business. Just wait and periodically check the MyBook website for new drivers.
