I have almost the same problem (and I'm pretty sure the issue isn't overheating). My computer freezes after about 5 minutes and it won't start up agian unless I forcefully shut it down. I'm pretty sure it's not a virus because I have anti-viral software and I manually went through the programs and erased most of them (in safe mode the computer works fine). Also, setting the computer back to a previous point, when the problem didn't exist doesn't help. Erasing all the temporary files doesn't either. Also, when I tried pressing F2 when turning on the computer. It gives me two options: memory check and hard-drive check. The memory check determines there are no problems, but the hard-drive check in the computer refuses to do a hard-drive check. I don't know what to do to stop my computer from freezing. Please help!

I have a similar problem. My computer freezes about 5 minutes after I turn it on and the only thing I can do is forcefully shut it down by holding the power button for 10 seconds. After I turn it back on agian it works for another 5 minutes or so and freezes up agian.
What doesn't work: 1.setting the computer back to a previous point, when the problem didn't exist
    2. erasing all temporary files
    3. disc clean-up
    4. F2 (memory check is ok, but the computer refuses to execute a hard-drive check).
What I know: 1. works in safe mode
    2. problem is not overheating
    3. problem is not a virus
I hava an hp pavilion dv 2910us Entertainsment Notebook PC
What should I do to fix the problem? Please help!!!!

It seems like you have some over heating issues. Compressed air can should do the job by the vents. If you're able to pull the cpu fan and heat sink assembly, then do so and clean them out. a tube of thermal grease will definitely help. you can apply it on to the CPU but make sure you clean out that no good factory grease before applying the new one.

best of luck

It sounds like a memory problem. I would get a free memory diagnostic utility off the internet, load it on a flash drive and see what it tells you. You may even have such a utility pre loaded on the noteobook. Check during startup what functions are avaialble such a "diagnostics" on the bottom of the screen during startup (before Windows loads). If it is still within an exchange period then I would exchange it for another one. I used to sell notebooks and unfortunately Compaq's were the most often DOA and returned notebooks that we sold, even more so then the lowest end eMachines notebooks. If you can get another make and model I would do so now. IMO HP has gone downhill considerably since the notoris HP/Dell/Nvidia fiasco of a few years ago.

from the off position, turn on, continuously hit the F8 key to force the startup menu, select last known good configuration and reboot. If this does not work, do the F8 thing again, and select safe mode. If you cannot reboot, you will have to do a clean reinstal using your factory recovery CD. If you can get into safe mode, immediately start saving your files to whatever media device you can.

go to start/run and type cmd and hit enter - type in chkntfs /c e and hit enter, reboot. This will start and system checking procedure on bootup. Again, if this does not fix things you will have to boot from your recovery CD.

Good luck!
