Question about Nokia E63 Cell Phone

2 Answers

Hi I have a Nokia e63 that was Vodafone, and I payed them to unlock it for Telstra use. I cant define an email address, despite following all the set-up instructions. At the end of process it says address has been added to bookmarks, but you go into email and it's not there. Also, before I unlocked it, I had to manually sync it to get new emails. I have automatic selected, but didn't work properly. Any help would be appreciated. Trent

Hi Thanks for your quick reply. The things is after I unlocked it the email function worked ok in that my email address was defined, and working, but I had to manually sync it each time, instead of it getting messages for me and alerting me. To try and fis this I changed something, and my defined email address dissappeared, so obviously I should have just left it and battled on with manual sync. Now I need to be able to re-define the address. Originally I got email settings sent from Telstra via sms. Also, when I'm selecting a server, so I choose Telstra Internet, or Telstra MMS and what'sthe difference ?

I've managed to solve the email issue, but now I cant get a "Active data connection", so access to web. There is nothing in the list of active data connections. Also I need help on other settings:

    - Packet data (big pond, Telstra, Telstra Internet or Telstra MMS ??).
    - Positioning Server/Access Point (big pond, Telstra, Telstra Internet or Telstra MMS ??).
    - Email (big pond, Telstra, Telstra Internet or Telstra MMS ??).

    Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Ekse for your help. I have managed to set up the email now, but there are a few little teething problems :

    1. My hotmail is set up on home screen and I can view new emails in the messaging folder aongside sms etc. But underneath Hotmail reminder on home page, it tells me how many new emails are there and you can see topic line. But when you click on that, it takes me to email folder, where sync settings are as well, and the email address/messages are not there. But if I go into messaging folder I can read them.

    2. Also, I cant delete the emails in messaging folders, so even after I have read them, the "2 new messages" notification stays there, until I log into hotmail and actually delete them manually. Should I delete them in messaging folder ?

    3. On top of this, I can receive sms, but cant send them, message saying "check network settings".

    My provider is Telstra.

    Thanks again

    Thanks Ekse,

I have got the right message centre selected with the correct number, but when I turn the phone off, it reverts to the old setting each time - how do I stop this and hold new setting ?, And, my final question : the automatic sync basically delivers an alert to home screen with new mail, but to refresh that after I have read mail,do I have to click on the sync and do it manually every time ? , or can it be set up to sync by itself ?

  • trenthiggs Nov 11, 2010

    Hi Ekse,

The phone keeps on diverting back to the old Text Message Centre and means no texting. Even though I deleted the old message centre, once you turn it off and then back on, you are back to the start again. Is there any way to get around this ?

  • trenthiggs Nov 14, 2010

Yeah I did buy the phone from Vodafone, and their branding is there each time I turn the phone on. But, that said, the incorrect message centre that it loads up each time was created by me, and I named it and entered the number, so therefore, it can't be Vodafone specific ???? I've tried to go in and use this same default message centre, but I changed the number to the correct one, but the phone still diverts back to the original centre and wrong number. How can I solve this and not have to manually select the right mesage centre each time ? Is there another setting I dont know about? I've been going into the Message folder, and text message settings and deleting this wrong message centre each time, but then everything I mentioned above happens. Thanks for your help !

Ekse, I meman to add to my previous reply : is there a way you can clear delete all current setting and revert to what the phone came with so I can re-configure settings?

You'd better select Telstra internet, as you won't be able to sync emails over the mms network settings most likely.

Is telstra providing you with a new email or are you using gmail or similiar email service? set it up as a pop or imap email. Gmail works with both aslong as you have imap or pop turned on in your accounts settings

To Set up POP or IMAP e-mail
1. Go to the home screen, scroll to the e-mail wizard, and press the scroll key.
2. Select Start e-mail setup.
3. Read the information on the display, and select Start.
4. Select Yes to allow your device to access the network.
5. Enter your e-mail address and password.
6. Read the information on the display, and select OK to finalise e-mail setup.

The name of your new mailbox replaces Mailbox in the Messaging main view

Let me know whos providing you with your email service and lets see what you need to do to set it up, if the above didn't already solve the problem.

On the sms problem, it might be that the messaging center number is incorrect in the settings and its sending the sms into wrong number.

Its been long since I last used hotmail, but if their service is Imap, which loads a copy of the email to the phone and leaves another on the net in that case you can't delete it, you can mark it as read most likely.

I use gmail and I don't delete my messages I must have something like 30 000 emails.

Talk to your service provider about the sms messages and have them check with you the gateway / messaging center number atleast.

In the text message settings theres Message centres, maybe you can remove a setting or centre from the list somehow.

Also Preferred connection screen, maybe you can set a preferred server from there, most likely the old server is now on the preferred connection and its taking it from there - possibly - or it might be something else. It might give you completely unrelated options.

I'm guessing the phones software is automatically going back to the vodafone on each restart.

As for the email, you can set up automatic retrieval on the email. and you can turn off the notifications in the automatic retrieval settings

To define the automatic retrieval settings for an e-mail account, select the account and Options > Edit > Automatic retrieval, and define the following settings:

*E-mail retrieval - Select Enabled to retrieve new e-mail messages automatically from your remote mailbox, or

*Only in home netw. to retrieve new e-mail messages automatically from your remote mailbox only when you are in your home network and not, for example, travelling.

It shouldn't alert you from old messages.

Did you buy this phone from vodafone? does it have vodefone branding when you turn the phone on or similar? if it does, the firmware of the phone is branded do vodafone and it will keep doing that, to get around it a unbranded firmware would need to be loaded to the phone.

    • Enter the code: *#7370# and press Yes to confirm initialization.

    • OR try the below with phone turned off:

    • on/off button + * button + 3 button

I am finding that the E63 once unlocked will not work with email the same way it did when it was locked to the "correct" provider. That is a low level feature of the phone that works exclusively with the provider. Their servers actually do the configuration for the email and then send and receive it for the phone... then deliver it to the phone. So basically it will not work unless Telstra has a way to get email for an E63 specifically. You should call their support, explain the situation and see if they have a way to get email service on your phone, to my knowledge it is not possible.

Thanks, let me know if you have any questions or concerns, just reply to my answer here and I will be right back with you.

The MMS would be just regular text messaging, you definitely want the "internet server" choice. That should allow you to go back to manually syncing as you were.

I bought a Nokia E63 Virgin in Australia as a gift to my husband back in Fiji but when we tried to use it, it was locked. Pls help us unlock it. Is there are fees we could pay to assist us in unlocking...

To unlock your phone, follow the information from this link.

If you are willing to pay the small fee, I would suggest using the paid site in my instructions above. There are some other sites on the Internet that will charge you over $50 for the same thing.

My Nokia E63 is locked to vodafone where do I find the code to unlock it with out paying.?

I can assure you there is no free unlocking solution for these phones and I doubt there ever will be, unless of course you can get Vodafone to give you the unlock code, however they are also likely to charge you. Vodafone in which country? I have linked a site below that provides unlock codes for the E63 on Vodafone but only certain countries.

the nokia 6300 has a special chip in it so that each phone has a different code therefore its impossible to guess the code and unlock it free of charge.
I would advise you to pay vodafone because if you enter in the wrong code three consecutive times it locks the phone permantly.
Don't be cheap as I tried to get the code off the web and now its permantly locked to vodafone : (
