How should data be completely destroyed?

Data that is stored on hard drives often needs to be completely destroyed for legal reasons, especially in the corporate realm. Corporations need to thoroughly dispose of financial data to protect both their customers and their business. There are 2 compliant methods of achieving this and these are:

- Secure Hard Drive Destruction
This involves physically shredding and pulverizing hard drives to the point where they can no longer be repaired. This is considered the most definitive and foolproof way to completely destroy data, as once the hard drive is physically shredded, the data is forever irretrievable.

- Kill Disk Hard Drive Erasure
This is the non-physical erasure of the data on the drive. It relies on software to overwrite and completely erase and destroy all information stored on the drive without physically shredding it. To achieve this, specialist equipment and methodology is used and followed in-line with governmental regulations.

I wanted to know if the hard drive on a Ricoh Aficio 1018D is a memory or physical hard please advise

Most newer printers have a regular hard drive, which retains most information that has been entered. It is advised to remove the hard drive when disposing of the printer.

Drive makes clicking noise

See clicking, grinding or any unwanted type of noise is a clear indication of physical hard drive failure so, if you have very important data stored in your drive then you should take an immediate assistance from the data recovery professional. In physical hard drive failure you shouldn't delay as it can damage your hard drive more severely and can make you to loose your data for for forever. But if you consult a data recovery expert on time for sure you will be able to save and get back your data. If any other query drop a reply.

Virtual Hard disk : does it mean i can create a VHD of 500gb on 320HDD and can put data more than 320gb? Is it possible? if it is then will i lose any data if my operating system goes bad?

Who told you that? No you cannot create a virtual hard drive with a storage capacity larger than that of the physical hard drive that contains it. And yes, you will lose any data stored on the hard drive if your physical drive is reformatted.

I dropped the external Portable Hardrive (WD 500mg) and now it wont show any files that are on it. Is there any way to recover what is on the harddrive???? Jane I have tried plugging in and viewing but...

Hi Oscarmegs,
Your data on the hard drive are lost due to physical damage. But don't worry, you can recover data from hard drive with data recovery software.I have succeed with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage etc.
Anyway, download a trial version and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered.

I dropped my external hard drive one day and i started hearing rattling sound when i plug it. It worked fine for awhile. Now when I plug's detected by the computer, in other words I get that sound...

I am sorry to hear that. Hard drives have very sensitive moving parts that move require a very high degree of precision and tolerance. As such, they are very susceptible to shock. By the way you describe your problem, it sounds as though there is physical damage to the disk or head. "Rattling" noises of any sort from a hard disc is never good. If there is physical damage, there will be very little you can do yourself I am afraid. There are specialized services that deal with data recovery from physically damaged drives, however they are very expensive.
Here is a link for you if you are interesting in the inner workings of a hard drive.
Good luck,

Slow, and sometimes non responsive. I just cloned my old hard drive in my Macbook Pro to a new 500gb WD drive. What could be the issue? please advise

Please check that the power connection - to the outlet and to the device itself is as it should be. Mostly, when these things occur, it's related to a physical problem - either with the power source (cable/outlet) or a physical problem with the drive itself.

Do I need only one cord (usb) to connect to my laptop?

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.
