Diagnose.
Check for loose connections first.

Harddrive, Ram Memory. Make sure they are plugged in tightly.

Make sure the Battery is plugged in tight, (AC adapter { Charger} NOT connected)
If it is the version with dual battery's, make sure you check them both.

Past this point it may be a cracked circuit trace on the motherboard, caused by a broken motherboard.
(Circuit Trace. Also known as Signal Trace.
Think, very flat thin copper wires that go all over the motherboard)

[Laptop turned over, Battery facing AWAY from you;
The Memory Bay Compartment is to the far right/middle.

One Philips head screw to loosen, then the compartment door can be raised up on the screw side, and compartment door lifted out.
Note the small tabs on the compartment door, and opposite of the screw side.

REMEMBER,
Remove the ram memory module { 'Stick' } at a 30 degree angle. When you spread the spring locks on each side, of a ram memory module, and it pops up; THAT is the same angle to remove it.

Bring it straight up when removing, and you will DAMAGE the gold plated contact pins on the bottom of the Ram Memory module, and the contact pins in the bottom of the ram memory slot.

Handle the Ram Memory module by the BODY. The Body is everywhere on the Ram Memory module, except the gold plated contact pins on the bottom.
The Body is coated with a see-through protective plastic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1GB_DDR2_SO-DIMM.png

Refrain from touching the gold plated contact pins.

You HAVE to remove ALL ram memory modules, and reinstall them. This is the only true method to use, to ensure they are seated tightly, and correctly.

Wireless Module Compartment is to the immediate left of the Memory Bay Compartment. Below it is the Harddrive Bay Compartment.
One Philips head screw is removed, and the Harddrive slides out in it's Harddrive caddy. (Slides out of the side of the laptop)
Do so, then carefully slide it back in. Reinstall the screw.

There are options, and one is a second harddrive. If your model has this option make sure it is plugged in tight also,

Then,
The external VGA monitor you connected to the laptop;
Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect it again.
Hold the Fn key down, and at the same time tap once on the F3 key.
(F3 key is the Display Toggle-Over key)

No display on external VGA monitor? Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F3 key.

Still bad?

Problem is internal.
Use an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source. (Electro Static Discharge)
One example of an ESD wrist strap,

Information,

Make sure the Intel Pentium M processor is seated tightly in it's Socket 479 processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_479

Note that the single slot type screw is the locking mechanism.
Turn 180 degrees to unlock, make sure the Processor is seated, then turn the screw back 180 degrees to re-lock the Processor in the processor socket.

Make sure the Thermal Cooling Module is seated tightly afterwards,

Since you removed the Thermal Cooling Assembly to see if the Processor was in tightly, the Thermal Paste needs to be replaced.
If a Thermal Pad, peel it off, PROPERLY clean the top of the Processor, and metal plate that sits on it, then Properly apply fresh, new Thermal Paste. Reinstall Thermal Cooling Assembly.

In the link above, and in the large Main view, is shown the Bottom of the motherboard.
(In the two small views shown underneath, the view on the Right is a Top view of the motherboard)

Over to the left/middle you see the black Processor socket.
(Note color does Not matter)

The ATI M7 (Radeon 7500) graphics chipset, is above it,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1X-New-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-7500-216Q7CFBGA13-M7-CSP32-/190413272946

Left side shows the Top view. Right side shows the Bottom view.
Note the Solder Balls.

The ATI graphics chipset (GPU) is soldered directly to the motherboard, with a BGA surface mount.
Ball Grid Array.

View this small video of a BGA Rework Station, and the BGA surface mount technique,

Scroll down, click on the Red -
Take a few minutes to view the IR 650 demo video

IMHO?
If I had possible damage to the motherboard, or thought that the solder joints holding the ATI M7 graphics chipset to the motherboard were cracked, I would buy a replacement motherboard.

I base this on, because I saw motherboards that were stated to be working, and cost was $30 to $40.

Hi, I have a 1.5 yr old gateway NV52 laptop that has stayed in sleep mode for two days...I've tried turning it off and cutting back on but it is still in sleep mode...please help

Hi aiomason.

Remove the AC cord and the battery from the notebook. Re-attach battery and AC cord and power up the notebook. This will clear the Ram memory and force the operating system to "Cold Boot", in other words start the operating system loading up from the beginning instead of resuming from Ram the last time it was active. This proceedure should restore your Gateway Notebook to normal operation. Post back your results and good luck.

Have a gateway mt3423 when i power on no display i have already bought new memory 1 gig ddr pny removed battery held power button put memory in top and bottom slots still nothing but power light steady on...

You could have memory problem, incompatible RAM or faulty RAM.
Are the RAM the same make and model?
Try inserting one RAM module one at a time to determine the faulty RAM.
When one RAM module works, then insert the 2nd RAM module to see if it works, Swap RAM around in the RAM slots.

Upgrade?

Generally you can add more RAM, However, there are too many details that are needed about your system in order determine if an upgrade can be done.

Suggest you call Gateway Support.
