your monitors pwr supply has been worn down, you need a new one (most just get a new monitor) in order to avoid this problem in the future, make sure the screen is placed in a vell ventilated area, and that you turn the power off every once in a while.

Restart your computer,
and keep hitting the F8 key until a "start-up" menu
(white text over a black background) is displayed.
Choose "Safe Mode" and let Windows start.
Reset the screen-resolution to 800-by-600, and 60 Hertz refresh-rate.
Restart your computer, normally,
and then "tweak" the screen-resolution and refresh-rates that are "optimal" for your monitor.

My HannsG 28" (HG281D) shuts off the screen intermittently, as if it were overheating and was self-protecting. Power light remains on and steady. I can turn it off and wait a few seconds, when I turn it on...

That happens when the ballast transformer for the backlight overheat. Backlight or cold cathode light function is responsible for the images that you see in the screen.
Unless you are capable of replacing by yourself the parts with the same value and you have the right tools and skill to do it your own.
Otherwise, I suggest you bring your monitor to a credible technician.. or if the unit is still under warranty you can bring that to their service center..

nfleurat, If nothing wrong with the "on"/"off" switch, then must be the "switch-mode-power-supply"/"CCFL inverter supply" circuit card inside of unit. Look for a possible "thermally intermittant solder connection" and then resolder it. Also, inspect unit for possible "swollen" electrolytic filter capacitors on power supply board. Read more of my responses to other owners in my FIXYA profiles for more options you can use to solve your LCD display problem. 12fixlouie aka louie12fix Good luck on the repair.

I have had the same problem, but noticed something while moving cables. When I tap on the side of the screen, near the control buttons, it fixes it. You know like in the old days when your tv wasn't working, a good bang on the side of it got it working again? :) Anyway, that tells me it is a loose connection problem, internally, and not a heat problem. I will have to open the thing up to get more detail. Not today.
