Question about Computers & Internet

I have 2008 Dell Inspiron with XP pro- no parallel port for an old HP printer.(HP deskjet 1000C) I bought a RC-302 PCI adapter with the assurance it would work. I am computer savvy about installing these devices. The ports did not list as your instructions say. There is no manual on the disk for the 302. What port should I use? Joan McDonald joanm@ccvn.com

No more USB ports. I really love that old printer as it prints 11X17 paper and works for my house plans. It must be 8-10 years old and still prints like a champ.

I have an older HP DeskJet 722C printer and an Acer Aspire 5050 3242 laptop. Is it possible to hook up this printer?

I would say, it quite possible. If, the printer is a USB connection then it is only the matter of assuring the drivers for the printer will work properly with the operating system. You may obtain the latest drivers here HP DeskJet 722C printer

If the Printer happens to use the outdated parallel port, I would suggest to use an adapter, you can review the ones currently available online here Parallel to USB printer cable

It is always possible to use old peripherals on newer machines, it is only the matter of researching the internet to rather any available adapters are on the market to maintain older printers.

I hope this is helpful!

If your printer is parallel and your computer only has USB ports, you need only get a USB>Parallel adapter cable and follow the install instructions with it. Any computer store should carry them.

Hello and welcome draepeacock !
The only solution is a workaround :
If you have the W XP install disc , you can install a virtual version of W XP on your machine from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
If you still have the install disc , you can also partition your primary and install W XP on the new partition from http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html.Back up your data first.

Both are easy and safe , no specific knowledge required .

You can almost buy a new printer for the cost of the adapter you are talking about buying. They have all kinds of adapters: the kind that connects to the flat end of a USB or the square end. Parallel, male or female. Go to a computer store like best buy, they should be able to hook you up.

Hope this helps.

HP Deskjet 920c will not work with my Dell inspiron 1720 with windows vista. The wizard asks which port I want to use but only gives LPT 1,2 or 3. My computer only uses USB. What can I do?

If you really wanted to use it,you have to buy a USB to LPT port or parallel port cable. The other end of the cable is USB and the other end is LPT.

Can't install old printer on newer computer

The appropriate printer drivers are bundled with XP. With the printer connected to the computer and powered on, the system should automatically recognize the printer and install the correct drivers if it is connected via USB. If it is connected to the parallel port, go to Control Panel -> Printers, select Add New Printer and follow the on-screen prompts.

New Dell Inspiron connected to HP 820Cse printer. Won't print.

I've not worked with one of these cables before, but here's what I would do: Right-click on the printer icon and go to properties. You'll be looking for the tab that says "ports." Open that tab and see what port the computer thinks it's using for the printer. Chances it says it's using a parallel port, but it is in fact, using a USB port. I can't tell you which to choose without looking at what you see, but I think you might find one that makes reference to a USB port with a parallel connection of some type. Try clicking on that and see if your situation improves.

I got this dell inspiron 531 were do you plug your printer into?

If you have a PARALLEL cabled printer, You need the same sized port on your PC.
Most newer PCs no longer have serial ports, as they are antiquated and slow method of communication.

There are adapters however, if you have a smaller SERIAL port.
And ones that are USB - or a combo one like the following....
52a5421.jpg The Inspiron 531 Does not appear to have the PARALLEL port you require.

My 812c (older) has a parallel cable and usb cable. Look for the Mini USB on the back of the printer, and all you would need is a cable like this - TYPE A to TYPE B

Good Luck!
