Question about Singer Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I have acquired a Singer Touch and Sew 600E. I went through and oiled and cleaned it up. Seems to be in pretty good shape; however,I can't get a good bottom stitch. The manual that was with it is for a 628 so it does not have all the info for the 600E. The manual says that the lower tension is set at the factory so there is no lower tension adjustment. Can you give me some pointers on getting the underside stitch set correctly.

Usually it is in the top threading to cause the underneath stitch problems. Try this, totally rethread the machine, now with the presser foot up, pull on the top thread, it should feed smoothly, now put the presser foot down, it should barely move. Sometimes that seats the thread in the tension discs. You can download a manual, if you need one, at www.sewingmanuals.com for $10. and keep it on your computer (plus enlarge the diagrams), plus print it.

My singer touch and sew is stuck. I can get it to go up and down twice and then the whole thing sticks and i have to turn the wheel with great difficulty

If I remember correctly, the Touch n Sew is an older mechanical machine. If so, most likely it has seized because the old oil has solidified and "glued" the moving parts together.

Pick up some liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube (hardware store or bike shop). Open the top, side, and bottom of the machine. Gently wiggle the handwheel and apply 1-2 drops each place where metal parts rub metal parts. Do NOT oil belts, synthetic, or plastic parts and do not over-oil! Then apply heated air from a handheld hairdryer directed into the internal mechanisms of the machine. Alternate oil and air, and hopefully after several treatments, it will move freely again.

Remember, like your automobile, mechanical machines need frequent oiling and cleaning. If using sewing machine oil, be sure it is Fresh, Good Quality sewing machine oil. If the machine is used frequently, oil every 40 hours of use. If not frequently used, oil every six months (even if in storage).

2001 Touch Tronic. Worked fine yesterday. Today, why can't I wind a bobbin?

If you haven't cleaned and oiled your machine recently, you might start there. Consult your owner's manual, use ONLY fresh, good quality sewing machine oil, and apply 1-2 drops of oil each spot specified in the manual.

If the machine bobbin winder is still not working, does it still sew? If so, you probably have two choices:

1) Take it in for service
2) Buy a standalone bobbin winder (~$30) from JoAnn's, Hancocks, or Amazon.com

If the machine does not sew, take it for service.

The Singer Touch and Sew 600e is now only sewing in slow motion. Any suggestions?

It appears your machine is a mechanical (Not computerized). If so, it probably needs a good cleaning and thorough oiling.

Your machine has seized due to lack of cleaning and oiling. Might be best to take it for a standard service.

If you have the patience and time, you can try fixing it yourself. It will require purchasing some oil, using a handheld hairdryer, and applying a lot of elbow grease. But if you are persistent, you will probably be successful:

In the future, be sure to clean and oil regularly (every 40 hours of sewing, every 6 months if not in use). Use ONLY fresh good quality sewing machine oil, applying 1-2 drops of oil each spot. Consult the owner's manual for instructions.

I have a Singer Touch and sew 600E and need to know how to thread the bobbin?

thread the machine up as normal, presser foot up,open the slide plate, push the button over to raise the winder, take the thread from the needle and wind it round a few times round the screw on the presser foot, press gently on the foot control and wind the bobbin, when you have enough thread close the slide plate and draw the threads to the back of the machine and away you go.
