Shacade,
Check the discs. If there is no visible scratches then it is the console. It is a very common problem. Unplug all the cables and put the Wii in a different possition. For some reason, when you plug it back in about 30 min later it works! UNLESS you have a bad laser diode which I have repaired also. Then you need a new laser. I hope this helps you out.

saint2094,
I would try the firmware update, but it might just be the disc.

Good luck and happy gaming!

If Wii gives Disc Read Error, first step you need to check is to try another disc or clean the exisitng disc. This will confirm that problem is with either Wii or Disc. Wii disc read error

"Unable to Read the Disc" Error, or Disc Not Recognized (Will Not Play Game Discs) Situation:
  • The Wii console will not play game discs (disc is not recognized)
  • System displays either error message "Unable to read disc" or "Disc could not be read"

Important!
  • If this problem happens very infrequently, it is normal and does not indicate a problem. A Wii Lens Cleaning Kit can be purchased to help keep the lens clean and prevent the situation from worsening over time.

  • Wii Game Discs are region locked, and can only be played on hardware from the same country where the game was released. (A European game cannot be played on a North American system, for example.)

What To Do:
  • The Wii console is only compatible with Wii and GameCube discs. It is not compatible with DVDs or discs made for other home consoles. Verify that the disc you are inserting is compatible with the Wii system.

  • An error message may display if the disc is ejected during play. Return to the HOME Menu before changing discs.

  • Verify that the console is placed correctly.

    • If the Wii console is lying flat, the game disc slot should be above all three buttons and the SD Card slot.

    • If the Wii console is standing vertically, the power button should be on the top and the console should be in the stand. Note: Only Wii consoles with model number RVL-001 are intended to be placed vertically. (Learn more)

  • Verify that the disc is being inserted properly.

    • If the console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards.

    • If the console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.

  • Check the non-printed side of the game disc for dirt or severe damage (such as scratches or cracks).

    • If the disc is dirty, try cleaning the game disc. (How to)

    • If the disc is damaged or scratched, it will need to be replaced. Please click here for replacement options.

  • If the problem occurs with only one game disc, there may be a problem specific to that game. Click here to check our list of specific game issues.

  • Make sure only licensed accessories are being used. Unlicensed products do not undergo Nintendo's testing and evaluation process. They may not work at all with our game systems, and they may have compatibility problems with certain games or accessories.

Whenever I win something in Mario Kart Wii, It says " The game Disc could not be read. Refer to the Wii Operations Manual fo details." I've cleaned this disk thoroughly twice already and it...

Your Nintendo Wii can not properly read some portions of your Game Disk. The probable reasons are dirt on the lens or CD, or scratches on the CD. Try cleaning the CD using a soft cloth and clean the lens of your Wii console using a Lens Cleaner.

You can rate my answer if you appreciate it.

Cannot read disc

Hi there, you could try a few different things some harder and less practical to do than others so try in this order
  1. If it's just one game your having issues with the ensure game disk is clean and free from scratches (use the microfiber cloth to clean)
  2. Unplug Wii from the power for 2 minutes, plug back in and power up and test game.
  3. If all games are having this issue then laser in your Wii may be faulty so contact nintendo to get repaired here.

Unable to read disc

If (1) this error only occurs with the Wii Fit game and (2) you have no scratches or marks on the game disc and (3) you have cleaned your Wii with a lens cleaner product recently; then, most likely the Wii Fit game disc is bad. It's not your Wii.

here's the problem: the wii fit game is 4.7gb. Most wii games are 4.4gb. Burning a Wii game at 2x speed is fine if its 4.4gb.

For Wii games that are 4.7gb (full size of a DVD disc) the games must be burned at 1x speed or errors will occur.

It is likely that Nintendo burned these at 2x speed and therefore your wii is getting an error due to them incorrectly burning the disc.

Wii reads disk, but won't play it

I've been suggesting this a lot today, but it works for me 9 out of 10 times. Hold the power button on the front of the console for at least ten seconds. The light should turn red. Give it a second, then hit it again and it will reboot. See if this makes a difference.
