If the display shows "Lb", the battery is probably low; replace it. Make sure you are buying brand-name batteries, EverReady, DuraCell, etc. not some cheap knock-off brand you may never have heard of. There is absolutely no quality control or minimum performance specifications for batteries that are marketed in the US and there is some REAL trash out there. If the display shows "Err", push and hold the Peak Level button. Does the display change to "E09"? If so, then you have just been "had" by the grossly under-documented "planned obsolescence feature" called, rather matter-of-factly, "End of Life". This means that ~7 years after first being powered up, the unit will, BY DESIGN, cease to function, forcing you to buy a replacement. Would have been nice of Kidde to include THAT warning on the OUTSIDE of the package. Call their "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 and tell them what you think of that policy. If it is still under warranty (5 or 7 years depending on date of manufacture) they should replace it. In any event, buy another one; if they replace your first one you will have twice the protection. Not a bad thing. *Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle. Words to live by: "Every creative act results from a sudden cessation of stupidity." -Edwin H. My unit keeps chirping every 30 seconds even after replacing the batteries. The unit is over 5 years old.

The manufacturer has written this in their manual for your unit...

"Err" displayed -battery icon may show any state of battery capacity. One quick beep every 30 seconds. Unit is Error condition

Replace batteries. If "Err" (or blank display) continues, unit has malfunctioned. Replace immediately.

My detector is doing the one churp every 30 seconds which is indication of alarm malfunction. I have had it since Sept 2002. Is there anything I can do to correct this or is it beyone repair? I tried...

probably time for a new one. Most instructions for these types of units will tell you if it does the chirp after new batteries are installed, the unit has likely become defective. You got your money's worth from the unit. You can get better ones noew likely cheaper than the original one.

My nighthawk Kidde carbon monoxide detector keeps beeping every 25-30 seconds. Do I need to buy a new one?

Some models of Carbon Monoxide Detectors will give an audible beep every 25-30 seconds after it has sounded an alert alarm. This may have happened when there was noone home to hear it. A periodic beeping sound may also indicate it is time to change the battery.

Solution: Install a new battery and check your manual for instructions on how to reset the system. Check the expiry date on your unit, it needs to be replaced after 5 to 7 years, according to the manufacturer specifications.

If you are in doubt that your Carbon Monoxide Detector is not working effectively, REPLACE IT. Your safety and your peace of mind is worth it.

Chirp every 30 second

Hi,

There are 2 things you can do:
1. Check and change batteries.
2. Clean them. Ensure they are completely clean.

If that does not work, you can ask the local fire dept. to look into it free.

Other than that you will have to take it in for servicing/repair.

Detecotrs have a limited lifespan of 5-7 years. So sounds like you need new one (It's not worth to buy just a sensor). Take a look on amazon: Amazon com Carbon monoxide detector (watch out on reviews). I hope this was helpful. cheers
