I took the unit to garmin in Southampton and they pronounced the speaker was broken.
Quoted about £75 to fix it standard charge.
The unit is out of Guarantee after it was replaced by Garmin in August 2009 under Guarantee.
Before it ceased working the speaker was crackling for some months. If I had known it was a common problem as researched on the net I would have got it back to Garmin in Guarantee time.

What do you mean by Failed ? Is it crackling, hissing any sound ... do you have it on mute, it the correct language to speak chosen?
If you can not hear the street names anymore see if the proper language is setup,,, go to Tools... Settings....Language ... under Voice make sure one is picked ending with ( TTS ) text to speech

It is Muted on main menu press Volume.. is there a checkmark in mute remove it, OR on bottom of screen you will see FM Trans press that.... on next screen is there a checkmark in FM Tranmitter if so remove it

If all fails I believe Best Buy will replace speaker

    http://www.newpower99.com/aboutus.asp

you can call or email them, see if they do sell the speaker for your unit.... the battery kits has the screwdrivers or maybe the speaker kit do too not sure....

I have already sent them a request.. It's strange that all the searching on the net the only place was ebay, one supplier USED and no returns excepted. I think I will call in on maplins to buy some torque screwdrivers to fit, to get the speaker out. I think electronic suppliers would come up with the speaker but they will want to know the physical spec. With it out I should be able to give it.
I did read somewere its 8ohms 1 watt. size ???

Where can I get a replacement speaker for the Garmin 660

Please see this link for further information on speaker replacement. You may have a bad connection on the headphone jack as the speaker audio passes through a switch on the headphone jack. Most likely it is a blown speaker and there is a reason why these fail.

The speakers used on this site are of a higher wattage rating than the factory standard.

No volume on a garmin nuvi 660

Please see this link for troubleshooting information. In many cases this can be just a wrong setting but it is possible that the speaker is bad or a bad headphone jack.

MY NUVI 660 SUDDENLY SOUNDS LIKE IT'S TALKING IN A CAN....VERY TINNY AND IRRITATING.

Most likely the speaker has failed. try plugging in a set of headphones. If the sound is good there, then the speaker has failed and needs to be replaced. If you need more information, you can look here:

660 will not locate satellites. I reset many times still nothing. I have the dead speaker thing too. Artie

your fold out antenna is broke on the back of the unit and you are going to have to purchase a new antenna from garmin as for the speaker going out you can always use the aux port on the unit to play through your car speakers

You will have to buy them from Garmin for $69.95 but before you do that read the instruction book and do a FACTORY RESET.
This may bring everything back up.

GARMIN NUVI 350

HI Heather,

Make sure you don't have the sound muted. Have you tried plugging in a set of headphones into the headphone jack? If you can hear sound with the headphones, most likely, the internal speakers have failed. If you still can't hear any sound, the audio output stage on the motherboard has failed. In either case, you will need to send the unit back for repair. Be sure to have your serial number handy. Register it online https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/marketing/register.htm
if you haven't already done so.

More Info: If you can hear sound through the speakers and don't want to send the unit back for repair, you can buy a FM transmitter at Best Buy - the kind that will allow you to play a portable CD player through your car stereo. Just plug the transmitter's audio input cable into your GPS headphone jack, power the transmitter with your car lighter jack, set the transmitter frequency to a unsued FM channel and tune your car stereo to tha same channel. You should hear your GPS through your FM stereo.

Good Luck,
- Jim
