Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Hello, I have a Panasonic PT-53X54J. to attemp to turn on the TV, I have to plug it and it will try to come on but, quickly shuts down. Has a 1 red Blink, stops for a few seconds and comes on again. I read this may be an indication of a power supply unit problem. I open the back of the TV and all blue, red, green lights attemp to lit up before it shouts down. I heard that I may attempt to twist the red high voltage wire, that comes out of the black resistor unit, after waiting 30-60 minutes disconnected. Any other ideas. I haven't attempted this. Kind of afraid of the HVT.

21045, is my zip code. What would be the estimated cost on such a repair? Ballpark figure is fine. (and yes, they were talking about the flyback, black box like thing that has one big red wire coming from the top and then splits to 3 big red wires giving power projectors.

I am so glad that you actually wanted to confirm before you try this. The red wire they are talking about is probably the one coming from th flyback to the CRT. It carries around 20K-25K Volts so thats definitely a very bad idea. This problem is not related to that. This problem is caused by failed protection circuits on the power supply, usually resistors, voltage regulators etc., A component level repair should be performed and I would not advice you to do it yourself more so coz it sounds like you have not worked on electronic circuits before. You are better off seeking professional assistance. If you can get me your zipcode, then I can find you a list of techs in your area.

Huh. I knew that!Crazy people I would say. Loosening those cables would cause the flyback to arc and that arc is one of the things in the world that you do not want to be touching or even see(extremely bright and can result in temporary blinding). As for the estimate, it would be around 150$ max, as the replacement components usually do not cost over 20-30$ max(I once had to replace components worth 1.5$, a resistor and a shorted IC). Panasonic PT-53X54J Rear Projection TV. Suddenly shut off just before went black with a color line down the middle. When turned back on makes clicking noise and can't power on for about 3 minutes then cuts...

That is the classical sound of a Switchmode power supply, detecting an "Over current" situation and shutting down, for "Safety" reasons, like fire explosion etc. I get these in the shop frequently, (actually they seldom get to the shop, more, we go to them, as they are so BIG) This is a common occurrence. But can have many, many causes, the Power Supply shutting down, is a "Symptom", of the actual "Cause". Unfortunately, as related there are many areas that can cause this to happen. It literally can be in any section, or part of the circuit. really, the only way to effect a fix, is to first get a Service Manual. It is well worth the price it costs to get one. Simply Google the name off your TV, and add the words "service manual" after, Panasonic PT-53X54 service manual The manual gives service algorithms, to work through, to isolate the problem. It is still quite a challenge in any event. Rear projection TV's do have what seems to be a higher failure rate than the "Normal" TV's. Also they seem to be more expensive to repair. If you decide to get a repair ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding. No "Quote" no job. If you choose to do it yourself.. good luck
