The dehumidifier feels very hot to the touch and is not drawing water. It was working fine till we used it with an extension cord recently to help in a room with a flood. The problem showed up then and continues now that it has been restored to it's original position without the extension.

When you say, "Dimming the lights"-- are you talking about the lights on the unit?- or on the House wiring circuit? Tell me more about what else is running on this circuit?-- Like another fan-- or several lights?
Tell me more about your term: "Sounds like it is bogging down"-- Was the unit reunning fine, and THEN started to Bog Down?-- Or does it bog down right from the starting up on the unit?
Can you read the name plate on the unit?-- How many amps does it draw? Are you running it right from a receptacle?--- or from an extension cord?- is the cord a nice heavy duty cord? It sounds like you are not giving the unit sufficient amps for the work it needs to do.
Tell me more-- let's see if we can fix this dehumidifier! :-)

A dehumidifier heats and cools the air to remove moisture. Most are like a small air cond. The Condenser coil is right in front of the evap.coil. So the compressor may not be coming on. Does it sound the same as before? It may be low on freon. You will have to get in there and listen and feel the lines at or near the compressor, Learn how to get down in there to the compressor. Run it for 10 Mins. unplug it, open it up, and feel the lines. Some lines should be or can be HOT to the touch. Some should be cool. The smaller the line the hotter it should be, and the compressor should be warm (to hot) to the touch. repost for more info.
If your
dehumidifier doesn't seem to run often but the humidity in the room is
high, try adjusting the humidistat control on the dehumidifier to a
dryer setting. If the dehumidifier seems to run constantly, but there's
little or no water in the container, there may be a problem in the
refrigeration system. Try cleaning the unit. If that doesn't work, you
can't repair the refrigeration system yourself, you need a qualified
appliance repair technician to do that.
Hope that helps! Should you have any further questions,
please feel free to post them here.
