Question about Canon Cameras

1 Answer

The camera consistently looks up. I have to open the battery chamber to reset the camera. I can only take a few pictures at a time before the camera locks up. I have put new batteries in the camera and this has not helped.

Well as you can see this is not a battery related problem. But before we come to the conclusion that its a faulty control board lets try a few things. Did you try formatting the card? If not back up all your pictures and format the card. Corrupted file systems are known to cause this freezing problem. Give it a shot and let me know.

The camera won't open at all

Can you provide any more detail at all?
How old is it?

Have you installed your batteries properly?
It is very easy to get the positive/negative ends of the batteries mixed up, and the camera will not power up that way.

Also, be sure that your batteries are not dead.
I'd like to recommend you try the Energizer BLUE lithium batteries. They are the only ones that give consistently good use, and more than a few shots before they die. We've had them last over a month before (and we take a LOT of pictures.)

When you are looking at your battery compartment, the
battery closest to the edge of the camera should have the FLAT side up, and the other one closest to the door hinge should have the "nipple" side up.

Hope that helps!

Instead of taking out the battery, just open and close the battery compartment to reset the camera.

SVRGuy02 is right, set the slep time longer to avoid the issue so much and just open and close the battery compartment before beginning each shooting exercise

My camera now works!!! Found a suggestion to clean the battery compartment on opposite side of switch with lighter fluid. Only had pressurized fluid for lighter so used rubbing alcohol instead. Put a few drops of 70% Isopropyl alcohol in chamber and clicked switch several times. Dried with hair dryer. Didn't work, tried again. Didn't work. Then tried a few drops of wd-40, clicked several times, rinsed with alcohol, dried with hair dryer, clicked several times AND IT WORKED. Still works. Thanks everyone(especially codmac) for the ideas.

Screen black in all lighting. Icons and menu show and can view photos already on card, but screen black in all modes. Can take picture, but it is also black. Lens cover is open. Nikon Coolpix 4600. Thanks...

Hello, I went and researched a few points in the manual and hope this helps to some extent. If this doesn't help, try resetting your camera by removing the batteries for 30 seconds, then reinstalling them and turning on the camera again.
Monitor is blank:
• Camera is off.
• Batteries are not correctly inserted or battery-chamber
cover is not properly latched.
• Batteries are exhausted.
• EH-62B AC adapter (available separately) is not properly
connected.
• Camera is in sleep mode. Press shutter-release button
halfway.
• Monitor is off.
• USB cable is connected.
• AV/Video cable is connected

No picture is taken when shutter release button is pressed:

• Camera is in playback mode.
• Batteries are exhausted.
• Red (!) lamp flickers: flash is charging.
• Green (AF) lamp flickers: camera unable to focus.
• Message "CARD IS NOT FORMATTED" appears in
monitor: memory card is not formatted for use in your
camera.
• Message "OUT OF MEMORY" appears in monitor:
insufficient memory to record picture at current Image
mode setting.

Camera wont turn on unless i take the batteries out

I tried alkaline batteries in this camera and it would only work for a few pictures, then it would go unstable and do unpredictable things. The lithium batterys also caused problems like the ones you described. As a last resort I found that there was a ni-mh battery for this camera. I could not find this accessory. I purchase some batteries and charger then installed them into camera. reset the camera using the reset function, then tested camera. It now works correctly and consistantly takes good pictures. If the camera does not work with the ni-mh batteries it might be damaged or bad.

Rechargeable batteries, do lose their capacity if recharged when partly down- the best way to discribe it is to say they have a memory- but only remember the last bit to be charged. So put the batteries into a torch or similar and leave on until completely flat and empty- then recharge. So do that and buy some new batteries - a couple of sets of batteries are best to have any way. Make sure they are NiMah and the charger accepts NiMah. Then clean out the contact in the bottom the of the battery chamber with the eraser at the end of a pencil. and the contach on the cap. Do that first then come back.
