Question about Toymax Magnavox 37MF231D 37 in. LCD TV

1 Answer

I have a Magnavox 37MF231D/37 LCD TV THAT DOES NOT WORK. When powered on, the light on the on-off switch will show green(solid). If I try to use the remote to turn on, the light blinks, if I turn on manually, the light does not blink. I have changed the capacitors and 2074 and 2081 and this has not corrected the problem. I have read that I may need to change the zener diode at 6076(is in front of 2074). Would like your opinion to see if on right track or you think there is something else going on with this tv?

ok, what I have done is I pulled out one end of the diode at 6078 and tested it with my analog multitester. I am a beginner, but have a book that gives good instructions on testing different components. I did replace the resistor at 6076, but the resistor in the board was good. The diode that I checked is located to the right of the capacitor at 2081. I am not sure what you mean by standby mode. Actually it is more of a flutter blinking when trying to turn on by remote, but as I stated earlier, it does nothing if I push the button manually. Help.

    No, no clicking sound

Need to clarify,I checked the diode at 6078 and it was good, not faulty. I had read about replacing the zener diode at 6079, but I cannot find that number on the power board. Am I just missing it? It is a 9.1v zener diode

6078 diode has one end pulled out to test, located right of the blue capacitor 2081

http://img602.imageshack.us/img602/5052/... I am not sure the link for 1633 was correct. This one might work better. It is clearer than the other pic.

  • Jo Asleson Nov 09, 2010

One end of the wire is pulled out, just to the right of the blue capacitor at 2074. It is black with silver color ring around one end. Were you able to see most of the board on img 1633?

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/1856/... Is this pic any better?

  • Jo Asleson Nov 09, 2010

are they zener diodes or are they simply silicon diodes. In my book, a zener diode is not a black color, but more of a tannish color, and I think it is supposed to have the voltage 9.1 stamped on it. Am I wrong on this? The silicon diodes were black with the silver band in my book

I think it would be a good idea to get it. I can buy it and have it downloaded. How can I get it to you?

  • Jo Asleson Nov 09, 2010

I am having trouble getting the manual uploaded to mediafire. Is there anyway that I can email it to you?

  • Jo Asleson Nov 09, 2010

How do I email it to you? I agree, I need a break. I am bushed, but I really appreciate your help. You have been wonderful. email address is??

When you mean the light blinks, do you mean it reverts to standby mode? It is confirmed that there are some shorted components in the circuit. In addition to the diode I would suspect that you also have some faulty components that regulate the amount of voltage such as voltage regulators ICs, resistors etc., Replace the diode and if problem persists, then let me know and we will troubleshoot using a service manual.

Ok, flutter blinking, like its trying to come on. Any clicking noise when this is happening?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Nov 08, 2010

Ok. Since you have tested the diode and found out that it was faulty, the first thing to do would be to replace it. If the problem persists, then I we will do a more comprehensive troubleshooting. I think I have a service manual for this model and we will measure all the voltages in the circuit and compare them with those given in the service manual.

Yes that is possible. Can you get me a high-res image of the area around 6078? If you can just upload it to imageshack.us and get me the direct link...

    eagle338 Nov 09, 2010

The images are too small. Does the one 6078 have a small circle at one end? If yes then that is the zener diode. Its unlikely that you will have two zener diodes in the same circuit.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Nov 09, 2010

Ok. That confirms its the zener diode(6078). As for 1633, I was able to see the board, but its too small to see any of the components. Mobile capture?

Yes. Thats better. Having a look.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Nov 09, 2010

Alright. I see 4 zener diodes in the area. If none of them are marked 6079, then you have not missed anything.

You do have a point. Thats a tricky situation. Have a look at this zener diode

It does not need 9.1 V stamped on it. It can take variety of voltages and output different FB and RB(reverse bias) voltages. The one you have seen is just an example.
Its time we start looking for a service manual .

Could not locate one n my collection. After much search I found one online but its not free. It should make our task a lot easier though

Magnavox 37" model 37mf231d-37 wont tun on when i hit power button the screen lights up for a secongd and turns right back to black and the power button green light comes on and right back off I found

Your power supply is weak. If you think you can repair this I will tell you how. If you cannot do this, find someone who works electronics and share this repair. Two capacitors are bad. When pulling the back cover off, you may see one or two capacitors bulged. Even if they look good....replace these capacitors. The locations are numbered and, the capacitor having a value and temperature of 105 degrees.. Location of the first capacitor is 2074, value 25volts @ 2200 mf @ 105 degrees and will most certainly be bulged. The next capacitor may look fine....replace it. That capacitor location is 2066, value is 35 volts @ 1200mf @ 105 degrees. When you replace these, please be sure to get the polarity (positive leg and negative leg) of these capacitors seated correctly...this is a must. This will correct your TV. You will save lots of money, because you asked. Thanks for listening ..good luck...we will be here for your next repair.

Philips Magnavox 37" LCD Flat Screen 37MF331D Have replaced power board, main board, hit power a faint light on whole screen for about 2 seconds the nothing.

Disconnect the LVDS Cable that runs from the small signal board to the display panel and apply power,if the screen comes on,the Small signal board (aka Scaler Bd ) is the faulty board. other than that, all that's really left that has gone bad for me is the logic board.
