Question about Hitachi 43FWX20B 43" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

I have a Hitachi 43FWX20B that is about 8 years old. This weekend when I turned it on I had sound and no picture. I turned it off and waited about 10-15 seconds and when I turned it back on I had picture and sound. The other issue is the picture color faded and become fuzzy a couple of times this weekend. Major problem?

It will be a major problem if you have to find parts for it.Sometimes people get the wrong type of TV so I would like you to verify that it is indeed a rear projection. If it is,they are completely obsolete.I have researched 3 or 4 of them and no matter who made them, there are no parts left.I am currently in way deep with a person who wants to attempt to fix a 61" because of it's sentimental value. That is borderline sane I think.Just finding proper parts will be next to impossible. If you are in a position to buy a new TV,please do not say yes or no yet to my solution or it cuts off our communication I think.Just comment about the rear proj. and I will get an autolink to your post and reply. There are supposed to be some real good deals on LCD's this holiday because of overstock.I will tell you a couple of things to look for if you think you will do that.Greg

Economists are predicting really good values coming up on LCD's due to overstock like I said. When a new technology comes out,it is expensive and pricy. As time goes, the price drops, more people start buying, and technology improves quick. After a while, most everybody has the current technology and makers do not know enough to cut back production and the market gets flooded. That is where we are right now. This also goes for phones and cars(brand new models),such as when Intrepids first came out. It's best to wait 4 or 5 years because then they are able to work out the kinks. The first year they make a brand new model, they have no idea what will go wrong.By the time they find out,the second year model is already made and/or on the market with the 3rd year in production possibly almost fully seeing how 2011 cars were avaialable last April. Then come the recalls, etc. The 4th and 5th year are better designed. For LCD's,the better brands seem to be LG,Samsung,Vizio, and perhaps Panasonic.I rarely see problems with those in particular on here. Some names to definitely avoid are off-brand such as Olevia and Akai. There are constantly problems with those 2 on here.I was getting so sick of getting bad ratings on correct answers with those brands that I just stopped answering them. They didn't want to hear their TV was junk or whatever reason.I didn't say it was junk,I just mentioned their reliabilty issues I have seen. One feature to check for is dynamic contrast ratio.A number between 60,000:1 and 150,000:1 is ideal.Anything less isn't as good and anything more is overkill and unnecessary. Also,I believe all the 720p's are gone so there should only be 1080p's left which is what you want.Never buy a display model either. For what the TV has already endured is not worth even close to any discount they offer. This past spring,we bought a 42" LG for about $650.The TV is great. The brands I listed above are some of the ones I rarely read problems about here, maybe a couple more but those stand out.It is definitely easy to price shop from home also instead of store to store. If you see something you like online, call the store and make sure they have one first.I do it alot and it saves trips.Sometimes I'll be out and see something I was considering on sale then and there and it comes home.I mainly joined here to inform and educate.I have a background of designing and repairing most of this technology and want to help people avoid getting taken for a ride.It is so easy to do.Good luck,Greg

My Hitachi 43fwx20b has no sound

Sounds (pardon the pun) like a audio circuit problem which is very rare in this set.

Check a few things--if using a cable box hook cable direct to set to rule the box out.

Also if you have a DVD player do you get sound that way?

Last and least likely in this case is in the menu for the set is there an option for the speakers to be turned off?

Failing all these--set has an audio problem and although a very good set may be too old and too expensive to fix for this problem.

It is POSSIBLE also that a surround sound unit could be purchased and with a cable box with audio outputs on back installed and BYPASS THIS PROBLEM--BOX WOULD PROVIDE AUDIO TO THE SURROUND SYSTEM AND IT WOULD HAVE ITS OWN SPEAKERS AND AUDIO CIRCUIT.

I have a hitachi 43fwx20b it had several blue lines in it, they begin to get worse then one night the picture went out. tv still powers on but on picture or sound, also when on it makes a ticking sound.

This could be the main driver board for the display, or the power supply, or a fault on one of the circuit boards that is effecting one of the mentioned areas.

The set will require factory level service.

If the set is more than a few years old you may have problems to have parts for the set. If the set is out of warranty it will be expensive to service.

Picture problem

Most likely there is a strong possiblity that the vertical scan amplifier for the observed colour channel is starting to fail. An experienced TV tech who works on your model type can fix this.

Any fault is fixable. It is a question of the amount you are willing to spend, and the avialability of parts from the manufacture.

Hitachi 43FWX20B

I have a similar pblm. But your first step is to power on with tv's button. Look into the back through holes and look for 4 green and 1 red LEDs lit. If not there are 3 fuses on the power supply board.Fuses can be easily changed.
next step call service.
