Payne 383KAV heater. Gas valve won't open to fire heater.

Being as how you changed the gas valve, make sure the arrow on the bottom of the gas valve is pointed towards the burner. Check for 24 volts at the common and main valve terminals on the gas valve when the thermostat is calling for heat...terminals MV and C. You will only have 24v there if the flame sensor senses flame... either pilot flame or main gas. You coud have 24v there without gas flowing or flame if is is a thermocouple standing pilot system and the gas valve is not in the 'on' position. But standing pilot systems usually do not have flame sensors.

With a flame sensor in the system, you have to have either spark ignition or glow coil ignition. If its spark ignition check for 24 volts at the pilot valve and common terminals on the gas valve WHILE the ignitor is sparking. That would be PV and C. The ignitor should spark and 24v should be on PV and C for 30 seconds to a full minute without ignition if it is a spark-to-pilot system.

If you have a glow coil, it will energize and burn bright orange for a minimum of 30 seconds BEFORE the main valve is energized. Then MV and C is only receiving 24v for approximately 5 to 6 seconds. This gives the flame sensor the time to prove the flame....if it does not prove flame, the system shuts down.

Dear Sir/Madam: I was reading some instruction online on how to troubleshoot a gas dryer and I got confused on two items about the flame/radiant sensor operations. One described it as light sensor and it...

If your dryer is not lighting you should first ck to see if the ignitor is glowing if it is there is a heat sensor looks like a big wire 1/8th inch around that is near the ignitor that senses the heat and then the gas valve kicks on. There should be an access plate to see the glowing ignitor with it all hooked up. If you are set on cking it without hooking it up to the gas put your hand on the gas valve and when the ignitor heats up and the sensor tells the gas valve to turn on you will feel a click. The normal problem is a bad ignitor. If its the glow type its obviouse if its the sparking type you will hear it popping if its working. I believe yours is a glow type. good luck

It doesn't turn on - no ignitor glow, suddenly

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Without a model number we are pretty much shooting from the hip here. Having said that it takes all of the following to make the oven burner light:

1. Gas pressure to the gas valve and good solenoids (2 ea)
2. Power to Oven control and selector knob set above min temp
3. Over Temp sensor closed
4. Temp control "thermocouple or thermistor" functional
5. A functioning ignitor

So if you have power to the unit... and we assume the oven control is working.. suspects are:

a. Open ignitor
b. Open flame sensor
c. Open over temp sensor
d. Thermocouple or thermistor (depending on model)
e. Open coil on gas valve

Determining which of the above has failed is performed with an Ohm Meter.

If there is more that we can do for you just respond here.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Goodman gmnt060 3b doesn't light

check for 24vac between wires on gas valve about 5-10 seconds after ignitor starts to glow. If ignitor does not glow, check for 120 vac to ignitor after inducer goes on.
First...sequence of operation..power to W, inducer motor gets 120v and starts, 10-15 seconds later, ignitor gets 120v and glows, 5-10 seconds, gas valve gets 24v and opens, after 3-4 seconds the flame sensor approves flame and unit stays on. If this is not happening, it has to be in this sequence. Which ever is not happening and you do have voltage to that component, that component is bad. If you are getting a error code on board after it tries to light, pay attention to the code. if a 1 lock out code, that just means it tried 3 times and did not recognize a flame.

How do you light pilot light?

Dryer does not have pilot light.  There is an ignitor that glows when the dryer is started and lights the flame when the gas begins to flow.  With the front of the dryer off start it up and look for the glow. when it glows hot enough (or on a newer model it might be a spark) the gas should ignite.  When the flame sensor sees that the gas is ignited it shuts off the ignitor and keeps the gas valve open until the temperature sensor gets high and shuts it off.  When the temp sensor cools down the cycle repeats.
If no glow or spark-->bad ignitor If no gas flow-->bad flame sensor or bad gas valve coil If gas comes on and goes off quickly-->lint filter and/or vent pipe or outlet may be clogged or bad flame sensor.

Heater problem

The first thing I would look for is a blockage in the gasline, or at the gas valve.

It sounds like you are not getting gas to the ignitor/burners. This would cause it to obviosly, not sense flame.

When a unit does not sense flame, it will shut of, and usually try again up to 5 times (depending on brand/model)

So here's what happens in that scenario.

Call for heat.
Inducer motor kicks on, the sensor detects the inducer motor is working, and the ignitor starts glowing/sparking (depending on type of ignitor)

It will then send gas through the gas valve and ignite.
If the flame sensor does not detect flame, the glow coil shuts down, the gas shuts off, the inducer shuts off and you get your error code.

(Some units will then send on the blower motor, and you have to cut power to reset.)

Do you have a copper line with natural gas?
If so, replace it with stainless steel or black iron.

Coper apearantly reacts with the aditives in natural gas and tends to form a gray ashy substance that builds up in the copper tubings walls and eventually cloggs gas valves.

At the inlet side of the gas valve, there should be a screen to catch such things.

Turn off the gas, turn of the power, and remove the gas line going to the gas valve. Look for anything clogging that area, also look for kinks in the gas line.

Remember to use a "flamable gas approved" pipe dope or thread tape when reinstalling the supply line.

Lets see what you find there and then we can continue the diagnostic if needed.

Whirlpool dryer(LGQ9557HQ0), ignitor ignites but flame does not light

mounted on top of the gas vavlve is black electrical coils when energized it opens the gas valve,if one of the coils are defective it wont open and let the gas thru, its hard to test the coils so most repairmen just replace them all
