Does your laptop have a firewire connector? Many Windows computers do not have this socket.

There is a FAQ on the JVC website that covers this issue, item number 8 on this page.

When I connect my JVC DVL 520 to the computer, my computer does not recognise it??

Hi

It will not detect the camera because you have not set the camera to Play mode or interface mode. Hence change the settings to play mode or USB mode and then try it will sure detect the camera.

My JVC GR-DVL mini Dv Camcorder wont view tape play back

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

Gr-dvl-520u trying to record or playback tape it goes into safeguard mode within 5 seconds. alternatly pressing play and still every 3 seconds advanced the playback without it going into safeguard mod

According to http://www.techlore.com/article/10974/JVC-Camcorder-Stuck-in-Safe-Mode/,

"JVC notes that you are also given a malfunction code when the unit is placed into safeguard. If it displays code 01, 02, or 06 you should remove
the battery and powersupply and wait for a while. Code 03 and 04 indicate that you should eject and reinsert the tape.

If neither of these solutions work, your only alternative is to bring it to a shop or send it to JVC for diagnosis or repair. Unfortunately, there is no other way to clear the condition."

If you are getting E03 or E04 errors on every tape you try, it sounds like a servicing is required.
