Router wifi and computer dont connect

Some later model wireless routers have the Password(ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router andthis information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adaptersin your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit yourrequirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorizedaccess. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cablefrom your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computerand enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login andpassword and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID andEncryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 togenerate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born inJanuary 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. Toconnect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop, configure thewireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings ieSSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptops cancommunicate with your wireless router.http://www.fixya.com/support/r10267861-network_security_key

Tip

Configuring WRE54G to a wireless router

Before you start configuring the WRE54G you need to consider the following factors:

1. Make sure that there are no wireless security enabled on the router like WEP and wireless MAC filtering. If you have them enabled try to disable them first. Check if there is a wireless computer that is currently working on your network.
2. Make sure that the SSID broadcast is enabled.
3. Then Hit the Automatic Configuration button on the WRE54G for about 3-5 secs.

The wireless computer should be connected to the SSID of the Range expander.
The range expander doesn’t have any DHCP server. The IP address that will be assigned to the computer will be 0.0.0.0 or the Auto-configuration IP 169.254.xxx.xxx.
Assign a static IP address on the wireless card. IP address should be 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Default gateway 192.168.1.1
To assign static IP address on your machine you follow the steps below:
Windows 9 xs and ME:

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Highlight the TCP/IP of the Wireless LAN card you’re using > Properties
Under IP Address TAB:
Specify an IP address: 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Click the GATEWAY TAB:
Under New Gateway: Enter 192.168.1.1 then click on Add.
Then Hit Ok All the way out… hit yes if it’ll ask you to restart

Windows XP and 2000
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click Local Area Network Connection that you are using > Properties > Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties > Use the following IP address:
IP Address: 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Then click ok all the way out.
Try to ping the Range expander. Go to start and then run type CMD for Win XP/2000, COMMAND for Win ME and below. On the black screen that will pop-up type PING 192.168.1.240 (Default IP address of the Range expander.
If the ping test was successful then you can access the setup page of the Range expander. If not, try to reset the Range expander for 10 seconds and then power cycle it.
To reset the range expander, follow the steps below:
Hold down the reset button for 10 seconds then unplug power while holding down reset...plug it back in after 5 seconds then wait for 10 more seconds before releasing the reset button.
To access the setup page of the expander, Open your Internet Explorer and please go to http://192.168.1.240
If will prompt a username and password box, leave the username blank password is admin.
On the setup screen of the expander, you can set the same exact settings on your router. SSID, Channel, WEP settings should be the same on the router and you need to specify the WLAN MAC Address of your router to the space provided for the WLAN MAC address on the setup page of the Range Expander.
Once you applied the settings, the lights on the expander should be both blue.
You can now set your IP address back to obtain an IP automatically and Obtain DNS address automatically.
Range expander should be working after performing the troubleshooting steps above.

If you have an Ethernet port on the WRE54G, try to connect the range expander directly to your computer with static IP address then ping the WRE54G. Make sure that you are not running any firewall and Internet security in your computer. If you were able to ping the 192.168.1.240 try to access it through the Internet Explorer and configure it from the there. Follow the steps that I gave to you to configure the wireless settings of the range expander.

Make sure that you have checked all the wireless security settings on your router. Make sure that you have those disabled. Try to set static IP address in your computer and try to ping the 192.168.1.240 and see if you can get a reply.

To set static IP follow the steps below:

Windows 9x and ME:
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Highlight the TCP/IP of the Wireless LAN card you’re using > Properties
>>>Under IP Address TAB:
Specify an IP address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
>>>Click the GATEWAY TAB:
Under New Gateway: Enter 192.168.1.1 then click on Add.
Then Hit Ok All the way out… hit yes if it’ll ask you to restart

Windows XP and 2000
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click Local Area Network Connection that you are using > Properties > Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties > Use the following IP address:
IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Then Hit Ok All the way out.

Hello i have a problem I can not connect to this router, please help my system is the ultimate win7

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

I have a NETGEAR router and I need the SSID and the type of sceurity. With the password. Can you help

Looks you havent configure your router. To get SSID and security key you have to configure it on your router.

You have to manually assign SSID on your Wireless Settings and Select proper security like WPA or WPA2 and assign preshare key ( security key). After assigning when you search for SSID on your Laptop or wireless computer it will you SSID you configured on your Router if you click on the SSID to connect it will ask you security key, supply the preshared key you configured on router.

If you are very new to router you might need to refer manual

If you did not configure the Netgear wireless router and changed the default settings and the default password password, then your wireless system is open to anyone hacking into your system and change your wireless router's settings and they can hack into your computers and your Internet connection. The Linksys expander will increase the wireless range to give a wider coverage to your router.
I suggest you reset the Netgear back to the factory defaults (press the pinhole button on the back of the Netgear router until the LEDs flash then release this button,
The configure the Netgear as follows :-
To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

I purchased a wre54g range expander and have tried everything but it doesnt work

Who is the manufacturer of your wireless router?
check the IP address of your router.
connect the computer to the router and check the Ip address of the computer and the default gateway number. Default gateway is the IP address of your router. suppose the default gateway is 192.168.1.1. then open the set up page of the router . check the wireless settings of the router SSID ,channel and the security settings. Do not change the settings on the router.
If you are using WPA2 security settings them that will network on the WRE54G.
Now your range expander and the router IP addresses should be in the same range. Suppose you router IP address is 192.168.x.y and the IP address of the WRE54G is by default 192.168.1.240.
Now the x in the router IP address should be 1.
If it is, then connect the WRE to the router and open the set up page of WRE. change the wireless settigns on the WRE and power cycle the WRE and the router.
It should work

You can read more about WEP and WPA in the following links:
This article explains how to configure WEP/WPA-PSK/Access list on NETGEAR Wireless router (also applicable to access points).
Note:
  • You can configure WEP or WPA. But you cannot enable both at the same time.
  • You can configure Access list and also enable WEP or WPA for additional security.
  • After you enable wireless security features on the router (or access point), you must configure your wireless clients (wireless computers) with matching settings. Your wireless clients will not be able to connect unless you configure matching settings.
  • Its recommended you enable these wireless security settings from a computer wired to the router (or access point).
Configuring WEP:
  1. Connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
  2. Open an Internet explorer and type the router IP address which would be either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 (by default, refer to your product documentation ti determine the default IP address.) in the address bar and press Enter.
The Login window will be prompting for a Username and Password. The default Username is admin and the default Password is password
  3. Click Wireless Settings under Setup menu. n101675_image001.jpg
  4. Under Security Options, Select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
  5. Select Authentication type as Automatic and Encryption Strength as 64-bit (or 128-bit) - You must later configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
  6. Select Key 1 and enter any 10 hexadecimal digits - any combination of 0-9, A-F (26 digits if you selected 128-bit as the encryption strength) and Apply the settings. Please note down these values - You must later configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
