no it is no longer recording video, what do you think could have made this happen?

  • jhorst Jun 16, 2008

what do you think caused it to stop working out of the blue like that, I didn't do anything out the norm or drop it. I just turned it off put it in its case and then turned it back on a little later and it didn't work

  • jhorst Jun 16, 2008

Yeah the it powers up just fine, and I can even playback video on the lcd, but when I go to record nothing.

  • jhorst Jun 16, 2008

Sorry Man, I didn't realize that you had to accept a solution from a specific person.

  • jhorst Jun 16, 2008

Hey just out of curiousity how much do you think it will cost to repair?

I'm assuming all the batteries and everything are good. So it sounds to me the inverter has possibly gone bad for the lcd screens. I would call canon and have them service it for you. As this is probably the only way to get it back in working order. I've seen this happen on Vx2000's. It probably wouldn't be that much to have it serviced considering the unit in a whole. Being that it is such a high end unit depending where you live there might even be a place that can service it for you and determine exactly which board has gone bad. It could just be there connector has came loose. But being the model it is I would leave it to a professional as to not cause further damage.

Has the unit recently been mobile it may have at some point sustained damage. Which being its a digital HD camera means one of 50 pcb boards could have gone from a control board to a power board.

I would go with what LeetheDeuce Posted and call 1-800-OK-CANON and have it serviced as this is what I feel it fully needs.

    Thank You,
    Nate

id figure 100 dollars a board. and 50 for servicing fees. if it just needs a adjustment and servicing itll be about 125. none of this includes shipping. but id say anywhere from $200-500 on realistic but anywhere up to 1000$

The unit is powering up, Is it still recording video? Most likely you will need to send it in for service.
Keep me updated,

Call 1-800-OK-CANON and then you can figure out what can be done about getting it serviced. That is definetly what it needs.

I hope you will accept this solution and hopefully give me a very positive rating as I take a lot of pride in what I'm doing. If you have any follow up questions I will still be on to answer.
    Good luck,

As I asked previously, Is the unit powering on at all??? That will help me answer your question. Also I was wondering why you rated Midwest before me?
    Thanks,
    Lee

So the LCD works when you playback video, just not when your trying to record? If its not able to record that would be why there is no video on the LCD. Also as I said before I was wondering why you rated Midwest over me as the best solution. As I had basically the same answer and more complete previous to his.
    Your welcome,
    Lee

No worries your a good guy, just thought maybe it was by accident seeing as this site is hard to navigate sometimes.
    Thanks,

It's ok no worries. This site needs a lot of work to be done on it so it is more user friendly. The repair cost could vary depending on what is broken. Hopefully it is something small and only a couple hundred bucks at most.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you,
    Lee

I have a Canon PowerShot SX 20 IS 12.1 and I am having problems with it. (I have had it for 11 months) My screen shows the image sometimes, and sometimes I have to look through the eye hole to see it. Help...

Your cable going from the mainboard of the camera, through the hinge and to the LCD is either damaged or slightly disconnected on one end. This happens with rotating LCD cameras and camcorders fairly often.

We can do the repair, but will have to check with the parts distributor to find pricing for the hinge. Typically hinges are about $25-35, and that puts the complete repair package price at about $75 which includes the hinge, installation and return shipping of the camera.

Hope this helps!

The LCD screen does not show any images.

The symptoms you describe indicate you may have a CCD problem. You didn't state what model you have (you should always do that, you will get better answers). Canon has issued a service notice for several models listed here. If you have one of these models, and it is determined that this is the problem, Canon will repair the camera at no cost, regardless of warranty status. Contact your regional Canon service agency for guidance.

On left hand side of unit there is an Output control pin/switch it is probably set on BARS - switch it to CAM and that will solve your challenge. Unbelievabel but Canon tech support didn't know that..at least the lame rep I got on the phone.
