Question about Washing Machines

Kenmore washer just stopped

I started a load of laundry and my kenmore 24642 top load washer just stopped after it was filled. It won't do anything and I have confirmed that the electrical outlet is working and tried putting it on another cycle. I have had it for about 3 1/2 years and never been serviced. My Washer will fill up with water and then stop, it will not start a cycle. The first time it did this to me was last sunday, then on tuesday is started working again. Last night I put a load in and now I have a washer full of water!

This is a typical symptom of a defective or loose lid switch. If you open and close the washer lid, you should hear a clicking noise as the lid switch activates. The lid switch is usually located on the right-hand side under the washer casing rim. It is activated through a small slot, by a plastic piece on the lid called a lid strike. There are two mounting screws adjacent to the slot that hold the lid switch in place. Sometimes the screws come loose, or the lid strike breaks off, causing the switch not to activate. Or..the switch simply fails over periodic use. This results in the symptoms you describe. The washer fills, but fails to spin or drain. This is a simple repair that you can accomplish yourself. For step-by-step instructions, please refer to the following link:

If you require assistance in locating replacment parts and/or have further questions, please post back with your complete model number (located aorund the tub rim), along with your comments. That way I can assure the accuracy of any part numbers.

NOTE: Use care not to slam the washer lid. This can also cause premature failure of the lid switch components.

There is a water level sensor in the tube and it might be plugged. IT could also be the load selector or the control module.

Kenmore washer just stopped

Open and close lid, listen for 'clicking' sound. If no 'clicking' sound, check/replace lid switch. Also try tightening the lid hinge screws on the left side. if these screws come loose, the machine will not operate
