Question about Brother IntelliFax-2820 Laser Fax

Manual Doesn't Work Either!

I had the setting exactly as suggested (TAD/Fax) and had the problem. Thought going to manual (I decide when to turn it on for faxing) it would surely correct the Caller ID problem, but nope.  Still have the same issue - no caller ID.  I'm stumped now and not much out on this issue.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Fax machines usually don't have Caller ID. If you see the phone number on received faxes its because the sender has programmed it into their fax machine.

How do I turn of the fax mode

Do you mean that you want to toggle the unit to TEL or TAD Mode? When there is no document in the feeder, press the Resolution/Reception Mode button to toggle between the FAX, TEL and TAD modes. The Resolution/Reception button is at the top of the row of buttons to the right of the number pad. There is an arrow that will point to the current setting in the LCD window. (It points up for the TEL and FAX modes.) The TAD mode is only accessible if you have set the out-going message. (If there is no out-going message, you toggle between FAX and TEL.)

The manual for the Sharp FAX UX-A1000 is available here: http://www.specsserver.com/CACHE/FILE22348.PDF .

I hope this helps.

I have a Brother Fax 2820 at home. It is connected to a TAD. I want an external fax machine to send and bypass the voicemail greeting and print the fax. I thought I set the machine to TAD. Any other...

try this paul. hook your phone line from your wall jack to your "line" jack on your fax. then run another phone line from your "external" jack on your fax to your "line" jack on your TAD. now, make sure your fax machine is still set to TAD. here is whats important...set your TAD to 4 rings or less. 2 is the recommened setting. also very important...when you record your outgoing message on your TAD, make sure you leave about 5 seconds of silence before you start recording your message. the reason for this is the fax machine needs to "hear" the CNG tones that originate from the sending fax so that it knows its a fax and then can take over the call. if it doesn't hear those tones because of noise (voices, etc), it will let call go to TAD. you can try to set your TAD to 4 rings, but that doesn't leave much time for fax to "hear" these tones. if you set to 4 and don't get all your faxes, try lowering the setting to 2 or 3 rings.

good luck and hth,
razors

I have changed from a desinated fax line to sharing a phone and fax line. the fax machine rings along with the phone however the fax does not answer. i was told to purchase a ring decipher but cannot...

Your fax can share the line with your phone, but it needs to be set to answer or not, depending on your equipment and choices. You can download the manual from Brother here. The receive modes are explained on page 5-1.
If you're often out when faxes or phone messages might come in, you probably need to plug an answering machine into the back of the fax (the EXT. jack) and put the fax in FAX / TAD mode. (TAD stands for Telephone Answering Device. Be sure the TAD is set to answer before the fax does. The fax will pass the phone call through to the TAD, and if it hears the beeping of another fax sending, it will cut off the TAD and take the call.
See the manual for more info and other options.

Brother 4100e Fax Problem - Caller ID won't work with Fax Machine

Usually, fax machines don't have caller ID capability.. If the sender's fax number appears on the faxes you receive, it's just that they have programmed it into their fax machine as a header.

Try this:

Set the fax machine to AUTO reception. Next, you would want to set the proper settings in your Option Set List. To print a list press the FUNCTION key, the number 2 key, then press the # key until it reads OPTION SET LIST in the LCD screen and press the START key. This will print your list. Still can't get fax not to pick up when answering machine is connected.

if you have the fax-575 there should be a TAD setting.

This is the setting you would use if you're using an answering machine on the same phone line as your fax machine.

To set the Recieve Mode :

Press Recieve Mode. The LCD display shows your current selection.

Continue to press Recieve Mode until your new selection appears. After 2 seconds the screen returns to the date and time display, along with your new Recieve Mode setting.

The 4 Recieve modes are Fax Only, Fax/Tel, TAD:Answering Machine, Manual.

Hope this helps!!!

To recieve fax on brother

Press the 'RECEIVE MODE' button on the right side of the control panel, its next to the large 'FAX START' button. Here are your options :

Select Receive Mode
MANUAL
—You must answer all calls yourself. If you hear fax tones, press
Fax Start
to begin receiving the fax, then hang up. You can use this mode with
Distinctive Ringing. (See
Distinctive Ring
, page 8-1.)
FAX ONLY
—The fax machine automatically answers every call as a fax call. You
cannot receive a voice call, but you can dial out and make a voice call.
FAX/TEL
—The fax machine automatically answers every call. If the call is a fax, it
prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with a double-ring (ring-ring),
different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select
this setting, you’ll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the
following pages). If you have extension phones on the same line as the fax machine,
set Ring Delay to 4. (See
For FAX/TEL Mode Only
, page 5-5.)
TAD:ANSWER MACH.
—This is the only setting in which you can use an external
answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to your fax
machine, and answers every call. Once the TAD answers, the fax machine listens for
fax tones. If it detects fax tones, it prints the fax.
The TAD setting works
only
with an external telephone answering device (TAD); it
does not work with telephone company Voice Mail. Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time
do
not
work in this setting.

What does "TAD" mean when it appears on the screen?

TAD is Telephone Answering Device. TAD mode is the only mode that can be used with an external telephone answering device (unless you are using a distinctive ring number for receiving faxes). Your telephone answering device must be connected to the jack on the fax machine (labeled "EXT" for USA). When someone dials your telephone/fax number (to send a fax or to speak to you), all the telephones (including the FAX) will ring according to the number of rings you set on the TAD. The Ring Delay setting is not recognized in the TAD mode. If you do not answer the call, the TAD will answer. As your outgoing message is playing, the Fax is in the background, silently listening for fax tones. If the FAX hears fax tones, it will automatically go into the receive mode. If the FAX does not hear fax tones, it remains silent, allowing the caller to leave a message. The above information is correct for a Brother fax machine. Is your fax automatically picking up the call or do you have to push a panel button to start the receive fax process? Perhaps the fax is already "in" your fax machine's memory and only needs a manual printout. Check the fax call log.

Setting the voicmail

Voicemail or telephone answering device (TAD). There is a BIG difference. Voicemail is product of your telephone service provider. If you have voicemail, most providers have a solution to this that you must arrange through them. If you have an answering machine, you can set your Brother to TAD mode. In TAD mode, if your answering machine picks up, (you must set your answering machine to answer in less rings than your fax), your fax will "eavesdrop" to listen for the fax tones from the sending machine. If it hears these tones, it will disconnect your answering machine and accept the incoming fax. If it does not hear the tones, it allows the answering machine to record the incoming message. If you are home. If you answer the call and hear a tone every 2.5 to 3 seconds, that signals an incoming fax. Simply touch *51 on the keypad of the phone you picked up on. You will hear some shrill tones. That is your fax machine attempting to receive the incoming fax. Hang up the phone you are on and it will receive the fax. In any case, make sure that the receive mode is NOT set to AUTO. Set the receive mode to TAD or MANUAL. If these instructions were not clear enough, let me know and I will send you DETAILED instructions. You can find the manual here: http://www.brother-usa.com/Data/Documentation/Fax/User/UM_FAX2820_FAX2920_MFC7220_MFC7225N.pdf If you need additional assistance, please let me know before you rate this solution.
