Question about Nikon Coolpix L11 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Shutter malfunction few weeks ago I moved and when I began unpacking and got to my camera, I discovered that something had spilled in the box and was coating the camera. I dried it off as best I could, and turned it on. It worked normally. A few days later, I noticed that whatever had spilled on it, that I hadn't been able to clean off, formed a strange gel like coating around some of the buttons. I again cleaned off what I could get to, and again, turned the camera on, and about a second later, a bright flash, a loud pop, and a tiny wisp of smoke came from just under the power button/shutter button cover on the top, like those little 'boobie trap' fireworks. I took a few test shots and the camera worked normally. It's been about a week, and I again turned the camera on, and was able to take one photo before the shutter button stopped working. All the other functions appear to be working normally, but when I try to press the shutter down to take a picture, nothing happens. Is there any way of removing the cover to clean it? I have removed all the screws from the outside of the camera, but the camera remains intact.

It sounds like a part of your electronic system shorted. It's unusual anything works at all.
THe front and back housing fit together like a **** shell. After you have removed all the screws gently pry a thin blade between the halves and start seperating them little by little. You have to be careful since quiete often there are buttons and/or contacts that may fall out when you do the separation. You may want to try and pry off the front cover first (fewer buttons).
There is no real loss trying it, any repair (by a shop) would likely cost more then replacing the camera.

I have a Pentax *ist DL2 camera, which I bought second hand on ebay, but from a very lovely, recommended seller, so he wasn't having me on. But recently, every button I press seems to set the shutter off...

Take off the lens and fire off a few shots. Does the mirror flip up? Or is it permanently up? Does the shutter open? Can you see through the lens? This "lovely, recommended seller" may have unloaded his problems on you.

Perhaps it is a focusing problem- try it on manual focus setting to see if the problem still persists...

Shutter don't stop halfway

Yes, there is a small 2-stage micro switch that needs to be replaced. 1st stage is permanently pressed and not switching/returning back due to so many time it's been pressed.
It just time. Switch is right under top cover.

Nikon D70 Shutter Problem

I have a Nikon D70 which failed completely but exhibited similar symptoms.
I was fortunate in that I had taken out 3 years free warranty at the point of purchase and therefore saved the £90 (sterling) repair cost.
Nikon cameras are designed to be robust and should give a lifetime's service. Most should give 150,000 shutter actuations.
There is a piece of free software available on the Web that will tell you how many actuations were recorded on your recent photos.
Unfortunately, in the fast moving world of digital cameras, the value of a 2nd user older camera is very low.
You need to decide if you were outgrowing this camera body and want to replace it with something better or whether you would be lost without it. My repair took more than 1 month and I was not able to take any photos during his time.
I hope this helps.

must be something to do with the mode you are using like auto mode, manual mode P mode so on...havn't use anything else the the manual mode so do a hit and trial procedure. Also be sure to increase the shutter speed...

My camera will turn on but the shutter won't open!

tiny bits of juice, remember? maybe (or I am sure) this tiny became corrosive inside the camera. (orange juice is the no.1 in my corrosive juice list, water is the least). You need to open and clean it, or a pro fix is necessary.

Distorted Viewfinder Only In PIcture Mode

Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail. Get in touch with an expert camera repairer.
