Question about Dell Latitude CP DC Board Graphic Card
Hello.. i recently received a Dell Latitude C540 and it runs fine on the battery but as soon as i plug the adapter into the laptop the screen gets very dark but the laptop stays on and runs fine, and then to fix the problem i have to unhook the adapter and restart it, at first i thought it might have been the jack but that seems to be working fine because it charges the battery and i ran a 24 hour test, then i thought it might be the inverter but that works fine while its on battery power, so at this point im clueless any help would be great...thanks
Right click on the battery icon on screen and set the power and screen brightness as you require.

You have a ground fault issue in the DC JACK.
There are escentially 4 circuits in the jack and one is not making contact.
1: Negative Charge circuit (outter ring)
2: Negative Run circuit (outter ring)
3 Positive (Inner Ring)
4: Signal (center pin)
I believe the negative charge circuit (outter ring) is not making contact internally. Typically what happens on that model DC Jack is the tension contact metal becomes fatigued, and does not touch the outter ring.
This could come from Heat causing early fatigue of the metal.
Or normal wear, the metal has simply worn out from regular insert/removal.

SOURCE: Dell Power Supply
You can test the power supply using a multimeter. I use a paper clip to get in the middle if my multimeter probe is too large. If there isn't any power but the light on the power brick is on (if there is one) then there is most likely a break in the cable. In any case turn to eBay for a replacement, should be quite easy and inexpensive to find. Or you could pay more and get one from Dell. Companies like APC and Targus make usniversal adapters but they're expensive and not optimal.
