Thanks for your response. Before I got your advice I tried to refill a cartidge by drilling a hole like in other cartidges.....but it didn't work I must have drilled into the bag you talked about. I am now waiting for another cartidge to run out so I can use the advice (solution) you gave me.

Well first you need a refill kit... such as this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003H5907E?ie=UTF8&tag=dependascient-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003H5907E

Then you need to follow these steps:

Step 1) Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill such as a sink. Be sure that you are wearing old clothes, since the first time you fill the cartridge, you will probably get some ink on your clothes and hands. You may wish to wear rubber gloves if you don't want to stain your hands. We also don't recommend refilling as a family project -- it's amazing what a three-year-old can do with a pint bottle of highly concentrated ink!

Step 2) Look at the cartridge. Near the bottom of the cartridge you will see a horizontal break line in the plastic where the two parts of the cartridge snap together.

Step 3) Using a sharp knife or scissor blade, cut the label on the front of the cartridge along the line where the two parts of the cartridge come together.

Step 4) Using a knife, screwdriver, or just your hands pry the cartridge open along the line. Let it hang by the backside label.

Step 5) The exit port is the point where the ink comes out of the cartridge. It has an obvious stem. Place this stem to your right.

Step 6) You will also see a rubber oval-shaped bulb. To the left of this bulb is the fill hole. You will see a small ball in this hole. Stick a pin or the end of a sharp knife into this ball and pry or lift it out of the hole. (Saundra recommends a sharp steak knife. (*** Don't stab or cut yourself!***) Don't lose the ball!

Step 7) Fill your syringe bottle with the appropriate ink. You'll need about 30 ml (1 full syringe bottle) for the regular cartridges, about 75 ml (2 1/2 syringe bottles) for the high capacity black cartridge.

Step 8) Insert the needle 1/4 to 1/2 inch (5-10mm) into the fill hole. Be careful not to puncture the bag, especially if you have a sharp needle.

Step 9) Inject the ink into the opening.

Step 10) Tilt the bag so that the opening is at the top. This will let the air bubble up and out.

Step 11) Using the syringe, suction about 1 ml (1/4 teaspoon) of ink and air frothy mixture out of the top of the bag.

Step 12) Inspect the ball. If it has been damaged, you should use a new ball or the damage may cause a slight leak. (We have additional balls for sale.)

Step 13) Replace the ball in the cartridge. Saundra says, "The tip of a retracted ball-point pen is ideal for this."

Step 14) Turn the cartridge upside down (stem down) and gently squeeze to check for leaks.

Thanks, let me know if you have any questions or concerns, just reply to my answer here and I will be right back with you.

Ink cartridge refilled at Costco and the printer says it is empty. How do I override?

If the cartridge is truly empty go to Costco and ask for your money back, or for another cartridge, but you cannot run the print or copy functions of the printer without ink. You would not think of trying to operate your car when the fuel tank is empty, would you?

I refilled HP 8500 cartridge but printer (Officejet Pro still thinks cartridge is empty. How do I reset ink level?

This model printer may only let you use genuine printer cartridges. If you try to refill these ink cartridges it will not work because the cartridges have an embedded chip in the cartridge that detects the empty cartridge even though it has been refilled.

Had printer cartridge refilled but when i put it back in the messege says incompatible ink cartridge-black

I would never use refilled ink. This is a lesson. You can still print, yet the cartridge needs a new "chip" they should have given you when they refilled it. You can try: remove the cart. turn off printer, unplug it, then put old cart back in. Do this three or four times and the memory of the printer can only remember three or four resets and then put refilled cart in. Hope this works for you. I was told this for an HP 7130 (similar, yet older version).

How can I make your 8500 pro accept a refilled HP cartrige.

The HP 940 cartridge is the new version of the HP 88 cartridge. Both have a chip that estimates ink levels. Once the chip says the cartridge is empty it will refuse to print, no matter how much ink is really left in the cartridge. This is a safety measure so you don't get air in your ink lines. If you get air in an ink line, that color will no longer print. We can refill the HP 88 because there are replacement chips available for these cartridges. I own a Cartridge World ink refilling store and I don't refill the HP 940s yet because I don't have access to a replacement chip. If you purchased a refilled HP 940 and it's not working, I would say the chip has not been replaced. I would wait until a reputable refiller (i.e.-Cartridge World, Office Depot, etc..) offers refills for this cartridge before you try anything off the internet.

How to refill the cartridge

This printer takes the HP 940 cartridge. I own a Cartridge World ink refilling store and we cannot refill these cartridges yet. There is a chip on the cartridge that estimates the ink levels and shuts off the cartridge when it thinks it is empty. Any refills you find are either violating patent law with replacement chips or they are telling you to take the chip off your old cartridge and put it on the new one. This second scenario is a rip off because once the chip says the cartridge is empty, no matter how much ink is left, it will refuse to print.

How to Refill HP940XL Ink Cartridge?

I just bought a printer that uses these same cartridges & I just got off the phone with Cartridge World. Apparently, the cartridges can be refilled, but there's a microchip that prevents the refilled cartridge from being read as "full" by the printer. They are working on "cracking the code" and, once they do, refilled cartridges will be available from them. I don't know if or how that microchip can be replaced if you refill your cartridges yourself, sorry.
