Question about Robin Subaru R1100 Portable Power 1100 Watt Generator

1 Answer

Small 1100watt Generator (Suburu by Robin) Had not been started up for almost a year and the experienced a short runaway where the RPMs increased way beyond redline. Engine was shut down and then could not be started. Replaced spark plug and took apart the carb. Carb was cleaned with solvent and all orfices blown out. Engine will now start but will not stay running for long and will not come up to RPMs (remains at slow idle). The generator is very handy because it is only 23 lbs and is very easy to trow in the back of the truck. It has just enough power to runs some of the power tools away from the barn.

The govenor is controlled electronically and does seem to be operating. After starting I can see it opening and closing this butterfly valve. Manually assiting does help to keep the engine running for slightly longer periods but I am still unable to get any RPMs out of the engine of keep it running for periods longer than 10-20 seconds or so.
Compression seems very good. Also plug does not seem to be getting fouled but is burning clean.

I will check it out tonight. My Generator does not look anything like the link that you sent. Not that it should make that much of a difference as a 2 stroke is a 2 stroke,

The model I have is an older unit that was a propotional item that Suburu (cars ) was giving away.

When the engine is not running the throttle is held wide open by the governor arm/spring. Varnish in carb most likely kept throttle stuck in the open position until small amount of gas in carb was consumed. Check your linkage /governor spring to make sure it is working properly. With engine off you should be able to move throttle closed easily and it should go to full after you release. After you adjust governor and are ready to start engine be ready to manually control throttle if engine begins to run at full speed. Runaway engine could have damaged the centrficical force style governor mech inside of the engine. As the engine starts have your finger on the throttle linkage, push the throttle open and you should feel the governor push against your pressure. Now as for the carb itself, blowing air thru the orifices is not sufficient. You must clean fuel passages with fine wire removing debris being carefull not to distort passage (make larger). Check that fuel runs from tank to carb with out restriction. Finally empty tank of fuel and use premium fuel for a while to help get power back up to normal. Good luck

Look here for copy of parts list if you do not have yours:

The generator electronics do not control governor. Notice the part refrence #10 governor arm, Parts #200 is the adjustment for governor and part #30 is linkage. Some generators have electronics to force engine to idle when there is no demand for power. Your problem is related to dirty carb. You can test this by starting engine with air filter off and spray carb cleaner into carb as the fuel supply, you must regulate how much carb cleaner to spray because if you spray too much you will flood the engine. Just spray a little at a time at different distances from opening untill you get the engine running fairly fast to check gen output and feel the pull ot the governor arm. It may be a two person job. If you feel governor react, and you have output, trouble is carb dirty. Not an easy job to clean carb after old fuel, however easy job for small engine shop. Good luck and I hope that this helps.

If you can locate a model number on the engine itself, maybe on the fan cover, engine block, valve cover, etc. and email me. I will help you.

    Ok try this web page:

Go to bottom of page look for service manuals and check out (ec03er ec04er). Does this look your engine, if not look at some of the other engines listed. If not I will look deeper.

Your engine is surely two stroke but you did not mention if you need to mix oil with fuel or if it mixes auto inject.

Next need to check if piston /cylinder was damaged during runaway. Best way is to actually look at piston thru muffler port. Need to take off muffler. If you really do not want to do that then you will need to see if fuel appears to be blowing out of carb as engine is running. Fuel blowing out of carb is sign of burned cyl. You could also remove plug and look down hole with light and look for scratches on cylinder. If all looks good, then next step is to check fuel lines for restriction. Long thin black rubber fuel lines tend to collapse and engine will starve for fuel. Look at condition of fuel inside of tank, if it feels soft not good. If fuel line looks ok next step will follow after you look at engines page and id your engine.

Why doesn't it start?

gen sets have to be run at set rpms so that the voltage and cycles are correct for the applications
with the rpms as little as 100 rpms below requirement , the voltage will be down , causing a brown out which burns out electric motors and if the rpms are low the required cycles will also be off which affects electronic equipment
service the gen set and find out why the rpms are not at the set level

I need a new robin subaru thottle body r1100

I believe this generator uses a carburetor.
Try calling Jack's Small Engines during their business hours; I don't see a carburetor listed separately and it may be very expensive.

You may be able to just clean the carburetor you have and save a lot. The video isn't the exact engine but it is close.

How to start the generator

Hi Joe, I had asked for a little clarification and have not received any information. I will answer this question based on the generator is in good working order and it is a recoil start. Open the petcock, (this is the fuel valve) and give it about a minute to fill the fuel bowl on the carburetor. If your generator has an engine an on/off kill switch, set to on. If the generator has an auto idle switch set it to off. If the engine has a throttle lever located under the carburetor, push it all the way down (full throttle). Pull the choke knob out completely, there is a detent on the choke for half choke, pull it past this for full choke. pull the recoil starter rapidly. As soon as the engine starts running push the choke knob to half choke, this will allow the engine to run smooth while it's warming up. Depending on the climate that you are in, warm up time will vary. After a minute or two in cold climates start pushing the choke knob in, if it starts to run poorly pull it back out too the half position and let it warm up some more. When you can posh the choke in without the engine faltering it is ready to go. In warmer climates you might be able to start the engine without the choke or in the halfway position. Robin Subaru makes some of the finest small engines available. I would choose a Robin over a Honda every time. I hope this gets your generator going, and once again this is based on the generator being in good working order. Good luck, Michael Burke.

My **** is too small hw i increase its size?

well, there is no surgery i know of to fix your problem. you could hang a brick off a string tied to it for awhile, but that will just make it long and skinny.what i am thinking is a combo vacuum chamber with a suspended wieght on it. hell, it might work! but the most common cause of your problem is that the "piston" is to small for the "bore" big blocks are not your cup of tea. i suggest mabee a old 265 chevy or 260 ford.if still no fit well then briggs and stratton/teachumsa/wisconsin might be the right direction, or perhaps a fine japaneses model such as robin/honda/suburu, also dont forget china, they have many small bore engine blocks.

Engine dies when load is applied

to sort out you problem i would take the carburtor apart and give it a good clean especially the main jet i would also replace the spark plug just to rule that out it could be a weak mixture causing your problem as you increase the demand for power the throttle will open drawing in mre air & fuel if the fuelis limited due to dirt this could be the cause.
as a quick test run the compressor and close the choke (cold start device) as that will cause more fuel to air and see what happens it isnt guaranteed to work but might give an indication.

Tappet clearance and spark plug gap on 5.5 hp ohv engine, i have a generator which runs on natural gas made by china i just want to know the gap of tappet and the spark plug gap

I have a Robin but they all are pretty much the same for plug gap and tappets. I worked in a lawnmower small engine repair shop for many years in San Diego
I set them all the same and never had one return. I just did mine a couple of months ago and hand lapped the intake and exhaust valve seats. Starts first time everytime like the 7.5 year old unit is new!!!

Plug gap 0.19

Intake .005 cold
Exhaust .006 cold.
