There are several possible causes for "memory card locked/protected", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

What does protected card mean when i try to take a picture

Most SD memory card have a tiny slide switch on the side of the card. If the slide swited is in the Lock position then the photos are protected and you cannot delete or add (take) photos to the SD memory card.

How do I remove the protected card?? I don't know what I hit??

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

I also have a Fuji FinePix J10 Digital Camera. I did as was suggested on your site, attempted to flip the switch on the side to clear the "protected memory card" message, and it still won't go...

Here is a diagram to show the proper positioning of that little switch. Moving the switch back and forth does nothing more then turn the protection on or off it doesn't clear anything.

I believe that camera is asking you to format the card, first though make sure you download the pictures from the card to the computer then format the card.

The function is found in camera set up scroll to format and follow the onscreen instructions.

What is protected card . my cam is not able to take and on lcd monitor protected card is appearing

The card may be protected and you will have to go into the menu to find the control to turn the protection off. Or, it might be something simple like the slide switch on the side of the card is in the locked position.

I can't download because it says my card is

For some reason the lock switch is engaged on your memory card and the card is write-protected (like the diskettes in old days). Release it and you'll be able to delete the pictures.
