Question about JVC GR-D73E Mini DV Digital Camcorder

JVC GR-D73U digital video camera

When you turn the video camera on and try to record, the screen is blank and black and the "lens cap" message is on. The lens cap isn't on. Is there anything that can be done to solve this problem? It will play previors vidoes taken just fine, but you can not record new video.
Thanks

The product is a JVC Digital video camera GR-D73U and it is not one of the choices so I picked a product that had a similiar number.

At recording mode (manual and auto), message says 'lens cap' but the cap is already removed and the video cam lcd is blank, though it can playback taped video.

I have the same problem. The screen is blank and I cannot record video or snapshots. Previously recorded videos work fine

Its a comon problem i have seen it time and time again on the net if you take it any wee to get fixed they will just tell yo to bin it as they can not be fixed pluss if you foundsomeone who could fix it witch i verry much doubt it will cost more than the camera is worth . The only thing i can advise is to put on ebay for charger battery/s screen and were you put the tape and try an get as much as you can by doing it that way but thats the only way we are going to get some cash back of your camera so give it a wirl thanks paul

OK, it is known problem of CCD Imager chip failure in JVC GR-D33 camcorder and ccd imager will be replaced to get live view for recording, lens cap message will disappear as well.
JVC will repair your camcorder free of cost for same problem, click JVC CCD Imager Support for details.

You have an internal "lens cap" that covers the lens to protect it when it is not in use. Look around the front of the camera, near the lens and you should find some sort of switch or lever that will open the lens cap.

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.

Apparently this same problem exists on many different models. I have a JVC grd72u. I called JVC @ 800-252-5722. I selected the "Corrective Action Program" prompt from the automated attendent. I spoke to a customer service rep. They are aware of the problem and are fixing it for free, but only until 12/31/07. I suggest you call ASAP and get your name in the computer. If the problem is something besides the CCD sensor, they will call you with the estimate to repair.

JVC has acknowledged a fault on their side that will cause certain models to display the "lens cap" error, and they offer free repairs, your model is also on the list. Here's a link to the JVC site : http://www.jvcservice.com/service/custnoticecamcorder.asp?ReqType=CCD hope this helped ;]
