Does the ThinkPad appear to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the fault may be just a back light problem. A back light can be caused by a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to determine the fault and fix :-

If the motherboard is bad that's basically the whole computer, minus the keyboard and the screen. And you need a screen as well?

This may not be something that you want to get into unless you're just doing it as a hobby.
It may not be cost effective.

Try Ebay.com for getting parts for the computer if you are prepared.

Walmart sells new laptops for $288 which are newer and faster.

Projecctor do not connecting

You can switch to anexternal monitor or data projector by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screenplus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn keyplus one of the function key. Here is a list of keycombinations for some of the laptops :-IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7HP and Compaq = Fn + F4Toshiba = Fn + F5Dell = Fn + F8

I have 2 ibm thinkpads t40, on one of the systems the lcd inverter and screen get no power but when i take the lcd and connect it to the 2nd ibm tkpad it works fine, What would be wrong with the one lap...

On the second Thinkpad laptop, that doesn't show a display with an LCD screen.
Plug a VGA monitor into the VGA port on the back of the laptop.
Hold the Fn key down, tap once on the F7 key (Toggle your display over to an external monitor)

Give the VGA monitor a few seconds to come on. (It's a VGA monitor)

Do you have a display on the external monitor? No? You May have a bad GPU then. (Graphics Processing Unit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU )

Fix? Change out the motherboard. Possibly Ebay has one, dunno.

VGA monitor has a display? Then you may have a bad Inverter. The Inverter provides power for the LCD screen. Inverters go bad.

Are both Inverters the same? (Laptop to laptop)
BE SURE. The Inverter MUST match the LCD screen!
Check the numbers on both Inverters. If they are the same, switch the good one over to the 2nd laptop. See if you have display now.
No?
Then it's the GPU.

Blank Screen

First, confirm that it is the screen itself. Connect the video output to a known working monitor and then power on your Thinkpad. if the known working monitor behaves the same way you can rule out the laptop's monitor as the source of the problem. This may be the BGA, Ball Grid Assembly, leadless soldering problem related to video chips on the motherboard, but first test the monitors.

LCD blank on IBM T30 - 2366

You are lucky to have an external display! That means that your motherboard nor video card did not fry. Two possibilities here: the ribbon connector from the mobo to the lcd has been disconnected or your cathode tube/exciter is bad. You must have some electronic repair experience and laptops in particular for success here.   Every screw must be remembered as to its original location -lengths vary. ESD precautions must be observed (look that up if you don't know).  Follow the remove/replace procedures for the LCD and do not ever force anything. Here is a guide: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-screen-inverter-in-ibm-thinkpad-t40-t40p-t41-t41p-t42-t42p-laptops/
It is not difficult if you organize and use caution. Good luck, Steve Medley

Remove any devices connected and power it on by itslef, either on battery or power source, if it doesnt work, it may have bad processor, When they go bad most laptops wont boot period.
