This hard drive is faulty. The clicking noise is the disk read write heads flicking back and forth (known as the click of death).
If you need to recover data off this hard disk, then there are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I have a SimpleTech 500 GB external hard drive (Model 96300-41001-013). It has been working fine for the past 2 years and all of a sudden when I turn it on, the blue light around the logo on top blinks...

Listen closely to the drive, if it sounds like it is clicking then it is probably not getting enough power through the usb. You should have received a cable with a split dual USB plug for extra power. Make sure that both large USB plugs are in the computer while the smaller one is attached to the drive, this will give it enough power to start working. If it is not clicking and has plenty of power then it could be that it is mapped to a drive letter that is already in use. Under device manager, (right click my computer and select manage then click on disk management) If you see the device in there then you can right click on the bar graph representation of the disk and select to change drive letter and paths. This will allow you to remove the conflict and have it show up again.

External hard drive won't show up on my computer

Enable Drive Letter View b> Click the "Start" button and choose "Control Panel" from the start menu. Click "Folder Options" and navigate to the "View" tab. Scroll down and place a mark next to "Show drive letters," then click "OK." b> Configuring Drive Manager b> Click the "Start" button to launch the start menu. Right-click "Computer" and choose "Manage" from the menu. Click "Storage" in the menu on the right side to extend the section. Click "Disk Management" under the "Storage" header. This will show you a list of drives and removable storage on your computer. It will also report the status of the drives, such as "Healthy." If the removable storage does not have a drive letter or has a drive letter in conflict with another drive, you can assign it a new letter. Right-click the icon of your removable storage drive and click "Change Drive Letter and Paths." Click the "Change" button, then choose a drive letter from the drop-down menu. Select a letter that is near to the end of the alphabet to prevent drive overlap issues. Click "OK" to allow the changes to take place. You should now see the removable storage listed with your other drives on the "My Computer" screen.

Dose it show up as drive letter E:/ underdevice manager in disk drives?(Check out:right clicking my computer icon onyour desktop, select disk manager)
If so,try right clicking on my computer and selecting map network drive.(You'llget the same results by right clicking on network neighborhood icon on yourdesktop and selecting map network drive.)This is the method many people use toassign a drive name (i.e.,letter) to a drive.
How about asking you to format it before you can use it?Then you can recover data from hard drive with datarecovery software like Tenorshare Data Recovery. It can recover data afterdeeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data.

My hard has all of sudden is not being picked up by my pc or anything for that matter. The power light is flashing on it so I'm thinking it might be the power supply. What do you think ?

Sometimes it could be that it's not registering the letter for the drive. If you hear a chime when you plug it into the computer and turn it on, it is being recognized by your system.

If that is the case. Right-click on your "My Computer" icon, and click on Manage. Then go to "Disk Management". There, it will list your hard drive. You can distinguish it from your computer's hard drive by the size, and normally your computer's hard drive is set to Drive 0 by default.

Once you identify it, you can right-click and "Assign Letter Drive" and that should fix it.

-------------------------------------------

If it does not chime (first make sure that the sound is on). You can try and see if there is a clicking, or a whirling noise. A whirling noise is a good sign. A clicking noise is not. If you hear nothing, then something between the connector to the hard drive inside is bad or the cord connecting the drive to the computer is bad. If you narrow this down, you can normally get the right cause.

I hope this helps.

My Verbatin 320gb hard drive works perfectly fine with my macbook pro.. However, if i plug it in to my windows vista pc or my ps3... it just doesnt show up. ODD.

do you hear it connect through the speakers when you connect via USB? If you do then click start > right click on computer and click manage. click on disk management and see if you can see the 250gb hard drive. if you can, then right click the drive and click change drive letter, if nothing is in the box indicating it has a drive letter assigned then click on add and choose a letter, if you now see the drive when you open explorer but cant access it then the reason it isnt showing in windows is probably because you have formatted it as a mac filing system.

Drive not working/ not showing on desktop/ green light showing on powerpack but light blinking amber / yellow on the hard drive

Do you hear a clicking sound while the HD (hard drive) is ON? If not, here's what you need to do:

1. Try to connect the HD into different USB ports of your computer. Or might as well, try different computer.

2. If you're using USB cable to connect the HD to the computer, try different cable. If it has a FireWire connection, then try FireWire.

3. If same problem occur, check the Disk Management of your computer while the HD is connected. To check the Disk Management, here's how:

- Right click "My Computer" (for XP) or right-click the "Computer" icon (for Vista or Win 7).
- Go to"Manage", then select "Disk Management".
- List down all the drive letters that you will see. Include the "Unallocated" disk space on the list(if there is), then unplug the HD from the computer.

* If there's a drive letter that disappears, then it's your HD. You may reconnect the HD to the computer > right-click on the HD's drive letter > change drive letter. Try to set the drive letter of the HD in drive X: or V:.

* If the drive letters remained the same, though you disconnect your HD, then, it means that the HD is no longer detected by the computer.

* If the HD appears to be "unallocated", then you need to reformat it.

*** However, if you're hearing a clicking sound, I'm sorry to inform you that the HD is no longer working. That clicking sound is also called the "click of death".

Thank you and good luck!

External HD is not detected by laptop Windows XP

A common issue...I'm sure your hard drive is working fine, Windows is just not giving it an unused drive letter.

1. Insert the device (camera or usb drive)
2. Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage".
3. Click on "Disk Management"
4. Right-click the item in the list that looks like your camera or usb drive, and then click "Change Drive Letter and Paths."
5. Click "Change".
6. Give it a drive letter that is not being used.
7. Click OK.

The device should work instantly after that.

Indicator light illuminates but PC does not read the thumb drive. have tried pushing down the thumb drive as well as all the different ports on the hard disk.

The issue with the USB drive (assuming the device is working properly) is that Windows will assign it a drive letter, which is probably the E: drive. Since that's already in use it won't show up in "My Computer", but will make the USB noise and act normal otherwise.

To correct this you can manually assign each device their own drive letter (start with the bottom of the alphabet so there are no future conflicts).

1. Insert the device (camera or usb drive)
2. Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage".
3. Click on "Disk Management"
4. Right-click the item in the list that looks like your camera or usb drive, and then click "Change Drive Letter and Paths."
5. Click "Change".
6. Give it a drive letter that is not being used.
7. Click OK.

The device should work instantly after that.
