It sounds like you need to initialize (or format) the card. There is a
function in the camera menus to do this. If it won't format or gives an
error when you try, then there may be an issue with the connectors in
the card slot or the card may be incompatible.
It is often difficult to find out the maximum capacity memory card a
camera will use, as today's memory cards are much larger that those
available when the manual for the camera was written. Even relatively
new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest
cards.
Finally, SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't
work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards
compatible.
