I tried to resurrect my Astra 1220P scanner to work with my WinXP Home machine. I began by calling UMAX, they told me I needed XP drivers and suggested that I purchase the VistaScan 3.55 driver CD for $18.00. They also told me to get a Parallel to USB Adapter Cable, which I purchased from Radio Shack. When the CD arrived, I went to work installing the cable & loading the drivers to no avail. The scanner does not appear in the Device Manager list under image devices or other devices, In fact, it is not anywhere in the list. Of course the scanner does not work. I called them back and asked for assistance, they told me they could not guarantee operation of the unit using a Parallel to USB Adapter Cable...and sorry, we cannot refund the cost of the driver CD. Isn't that special - I was so looking forward to scanning some slides and film because I had previously purchased a Transparency Adapter. Now I begin my search for a new scanner that will work with transparencies. Anyone have a suggestion?
This scanner requires a "Parallel or Centronics" cable and if you have a newer computer, you may only have USB connections. A "USB to CENTRONICS" cable may do the trick, but I'm not sure. Check on the web for one.
HP OEMed the ScanJet 3200C from UMAX. It's a Astra 1220P UMAX does not support this scanner anymore also HP does not but if you look around you will find file sj648en.exe from HP. This might work on your system, it's for upto Win XP. I have been trying to get a USB to parallel to work with this scanner, so far so bad many many hours.
The UMAX US website claims that there is no driver available for this device or requires you to purchase a driver CD. (I have the 1220P model myself) However, this driver is freely available from the UMAX Germany site. Just go through the menus and download the parallel port driver version 3.55. Windows XP uses the same driver as the 2000 one. When the prompt comes up for "unsafe drivers" just click "continue anyway" and it will be installed properly. Linux Problems
