Start-up

you may try to bring up your bios screen to see the boot order and then change it if you can....that would be while booting to tap the f2 or f1 key to get that screen ... then check the boot order, if it says position one is diskette, then try to change it...if you can't change it, get the bios updated then flash the bios....that should do it for you. post back your results

How do i uninstall windows 98 plus from my computer

You simply can not uninstall an OS (operating system), you may have to Format the hard drive itself. If you are upgrading the OS to a version that uses NTFS, like windows xp or higher, a format is suggested. If you have a boot diskette, you can do it that way. If not you can create on using windows 98, but you will need an old floppy diskette and a drive to boot. If you have a newer OS on a CD, simply insert into the computer and follow the on-screen instructions.
If you have a boot diskette(floppy), turn off your computer. Insert the disk and turn on the computer. Let it do its thing, once the diskette loads small programs, you will be able to format the HDD(hard drive).
you will see something like this after its done loading...

c:\

type in format c:
shown like this...

c:\format c:

A message will pop up, saying: WARNING! ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with fromat? (y/n)

If you are sure you want to erase everything, type in Y. The computer will now format (may take awhile) and will be ready for a new operating system!

Try to check if you have a diskette or usb thumbdrive on your computer. If there is, remove them first then reboot computer again. This is because your system, whichever is the first boot up device doesnt see any system bootup files on it.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you for using Fixya.

A used dell computer, hooked it up and black screen comes up and it says diskette 1 seek failure

Below is a list of possible causes.

Faulty or improperly inserted diskette, incorrect configuration settings in System Setup program(You might be set to boot from the floppy drive. You want to be set to boot from the hard drive), loose diskette/tape drive interface cable, or loose power cable.

If possible please rate this solution.

Dell Dimension 3000 Video problem

There may be a problem with your windows installation. Search Google for Hirens boot CD, it is a free download and should contain a live XP installation. When you turn on the computer tap the appropriate button to reach the boot menu, then insert the CD and select your CD drive. Once booted it should display a live XP.
Alternatively you may have your monitor set to an incompatible resolution. If tapping F8 won't display the advanced boot menu then try finding an auto setup on your monitor or change the resolution using the monitors controls. If the advanced boot menu does display then select low resolution mode.
Hope this helps,

Formatting problems.

Remove any 3.5" diskette from the diskette-drive in the computer.

Insert the Recovery Disk into the CD-ROM device.

Restart your computer, and *FORCE* it to *FIRST* try to "boot" from the CD-ROM drive, rather than trying to boot from the 3.5" diskette or from your C: drive.

Take the floppy disk out of the drive... this sounds like the classic error when the boot order includes the floppy disk first, and a blank or data (not bootable) floppy diskette gets left in the drive.

There could be another type of drive set as bootable. CD's and DVD's don't normally do this - they usually cause a prompt "press any key to boot from CD..." or similar.

You could go in the computer setup and set the hard disc drive to be the 1st in the boot order and also solve this problem.

Otherwise could be your C: drive got damaged somehow. Virus or otherwise.
