TO my knowledge there is no way to bypass the onscreen display on these typewriters and have it act like a regular typewriter... That was the whole point of these machines was the "word processing" aspect. Back in the day that was revolutionary and noone could dream that you would want to disable it.
I am triple checking on this for you now, but I am quite certain there is no way to truly disable that.
Thanks, let me know if you have any questions or concerns, just reply to my answer here and I will be right back with you.

That is a good question.. I guess you need to type each section on the display and then have it "write" it out, even if it is just one or two characters as in a date.
I am trying to find the manual on this to confirm the fact but it is very difficult to locate on a device that is nearly 30 years old at this point.

I definitely will, I should have something for you in the morning, I am heading to bed here shortly. Please hold off on replying until at least 5 AM Eastern Time... basically if you reply sooner and I don't respond to you within 3 hours it "locks" me out of the question and I can't help any longer. But feel free to reply any time during the day tomorrow, or at night, just any time after early morning so I can get it in time.
Thanks
Tim
No from what I am seeing the aforementioned scenario is definitely the case and not much documentation exists any more. You may want to look into just getting a regular type writer, they can be had for less than $10 out there..
