May very well be the unit...the hard drive inside may have been damaged during shipping (rare, but not uncommon). Was the touch screen damaged during transit?
Also, try disconnecting constant power (hard reset) from the unit and see is the reset helps. Downloadable from Pioneer's website is a firmware update for the Z1, although this usually just works to help freezes.

make sure your phone is in discovery mode so it can be seen by bluethooth device, I had the same problem with my lg voyager

You can try 0000. Most bluetooth devices have a generic passcode
Usually bluetooth devices are never more complicated than that.
